Description Jockeys only get a few minutes with most of their mounts before the gates open.  Post parades and warmups are a time for introductions and reintroductions.  How is the horse feeling? Responding? How is it moving under the saddle? Across the track? Is he leaning into his pony? How is he responding to the crowd? The environment? The other horses? What is his mouth doing? His feet? His head?  All of this happens in those few minutes.  All this acquainting and listening and learning.  It's a subtle thing.  Here Tyson is running his fingers through his mount's mane, his head cocked to one side as if listening to that running conversation between him and his horse.

I love my job, and I'm very fond of the athletes I work with. All images are ©copyright 1pen and my sports media company. You may NOT use, replicate, manipulate, or modify this image without my permission. All Rights Reserved.

The amount of things these riders learn about their mounts in minutes is fascinating.

These people are very in tuned with their animals, it's a beautiful thing to see.

In part, perhaps, where 'horse whispering' comes from?
