The conceptual illustration I saw in an early issue of Cinefantastique seems to suggest "beams" of energy that support the vehicle well off the ground but also has the side effect of blasting anything on the far end of the pillars of "light". Here's a link to that drawing (the fourth image on the page)...

I found this concept fascinating. It updated the machines to stay well ahead of mid 20th century human technology, but retained the silhouette as described in the original novel.

Someone else here at deviantArt substituted the "laser legs" (as he called them) for Spielberg influenced "tentacle" legs, but that's fine. I never even considered that variation, which looks intriguing as well.

Sincerely,

Bill

Yes, I took the inspiration for the legs from the 1953 movie.
Here is my very first 3d movie that I did back in 2000. It looks quite dated now.

Wow! Someone has actually used my "unused Al Nozaki" tripod with electromagnetic "legs". I've it's been downloaded a few hundred times, but you're the third person I've encountered who's bothered to post a render with it.

Yes, I've seen the animated clip that depicts this scene and I have linked it to my "favorites" list.

Sincerely,

Bill

Thank you for saying so. Were the legs meant to be "EM" or more like solid tentacles?
