the re-envisioning of kain is fine but the reaver shoud always remain the same it's design wasΒ perfect it's to iconic to change plus i'm really not feeling this two waves look you got going here

May I ask a question, your work is very good and this model looks like it's pretty high poly or not.But can you desimate a very high poly model and then retopologise it to get rid of the triangles.Because if you desimate a model and then devide it it gets deformed , in zbrush .Any thoughts on this matter ?

yeah man no problem-- you CAN decimate it down, but I only do it if the topology gets too high for my machine to work with-- then you don't even really need to worry about retopologizing the object or zRemeshing-- I ONLY do this as a last resort or if I WONT need to sculpt on the mesh any longer-- Something I also do, to make my meshes more efficient is, for instance, if I start a mesh out as a dynamesh (and the geo starts to get really high from sub-divisions and starts to create ugly topology) I Shift + Ctrl + D, turn that subtool down to is lowest subdivision, and then use my ZRemesher guides, and zRemesh it to low-poly quaded geo, then use your project feature.Β  Start at the lowest subD, project, Ctrl + D, project again, repeat til about 5 or 6 subDs or whatever your usual max is

after I'm completely done with the sculpting part, I save out a separate tool file, usually modelname_decimated, then decimate each piece, one by one.. then I will send it over to 3D Coat for retopo, or Keyshot for presentation shots

hehe thanks man Β  no, he's not in any sort of morphed mode.. but I did keep his bestial and bat like features-- the crown shaped webbing in his ears, and the change in his standing posture to reflect his werewolf form that he could change into-- close to a dogs hind legs.. trying to convey that he is more than just a man, more than ever-- it's apart of the slow change that happens to them after they go into their hibernation and awake w/ new gifts

I absolutely love this rendering of Kain. <3 This is amazing i hope that when they come out with a new LOK game that they take your render and make this the new Kain outcome.

Do you have anymore renders for any other LOK characters? I would love to see your take on the future outcome of the LOK characters. Would you consider something like that for a future project?

yes for sure!Β  I would love to redesign the whole crew-- Raziel and the other generals, Mobius, Vorador, Ariel.. future projects for sure-- I just had a youtube marathon of the entire play-through cutscenes of all the games it was really great to listen to the entire story all the way through again... I've been collecting reference and thinking of ideas I could incorporate into them.Β  It will take a while, but stay tuned

This is a very interesting redesign, I love how Kain's facial appearance looks more Lion than anything plus the perked up ears are a nice feature. This redesign works I think for a new game. Amazing work, if anything if new production on a new LOK comes along in the future make yourself known with this design because this is incredible.Β

Nice one! Love the details. And actually the Soul Reaver is pretty interesting looking IMO. One I would say is that with the feet and ears he feels more like a werewolf than a vampire. Also, the shoulder plates being ribbed leather makes them feel a bit less crafted than the pants or forearm armor. It tends to make him feel like a soldier more than a ruler. Β If there was more inlay in it with a pattern like the skirt, I think it would match up better.Β 

Great job on it though.. he looks cool.

ah thanks very much dude.Β  about the feet and the ears-- while I was designing him, I really wanted to make a shape on his head that looks like the crown he has in much of the other art we see, but I thought I would twist it w/ movable appendages that he could flare out like bat wings.Β  The feet-- yeah I designed them to feel more beast-like to further enhance his fierceness.Β  I thought it might be a cool addition to his metamorphosis-- on top of it, his toes (and fingers) are sculpted to look fused together as they became more talon-like over time.Β  Good call on the shoulder armor.Β  While I was working on them, I didn't have a great plan going into them, but I wanted to carry some of the ribbed shapes up from the kilt, but after that, I think what I was doing was trying not to make certain areas too busy and be fairly functional looking.. perhaps some of the triangular balance runes, or a patch of the clan emblem could help it..Β  Thanks for the crits man.. much appreciated

Love the look of Kain and the armor, particularly the working of his sigil into it. Β Quite nice. I must confess though, I do not like the blade.Β 
Β I would recommend something a tad more recognizable as the Soul Reaver and strongly strongly urge for a single blade rather than two. Β If you are wedded to the idea of two blades, might I suggest making them pronged, ala a viper or a vampires fangs? Sweep/curve out at the bottom then come closer together at the mid point and beyond.

thanks for the solid critique.. much appreciated-- I will visit the blade again for sure-- been getting some feedback that it could use some work, and I might like tone it back to the original shape to make it more recognizable, than to completely redesign it.. I'd like to add the boney bat-wing looking guard to it, perhaps add some rune shapes in the blade itself.. we'll see what happens-- I've got other work ahead of me right now that needs to take priority, but I've started the retopology on Kain's body-- still time to go back to the blade and clean it up a bit.. thanks man

yeah, i like that you made him a little bit bulkier. i never really digged the skinny vamp thing he had goin. i like that he actually gives off a badass atmosphere with your twists rather than just the creepy vamp feel lol. if you get what im sayin.

I really need to re-buy Skyrim for my PC.. have the PS3 version.. but I'm about ready to just do it because I haven't played through any of the expansions yet .. but that's awesome thanks for letting me know about it-- might be really fun to try to get him up in their Sandbox editor and perhaps release it to the public for that mod

The Soul Reaver is actually based off a real type of sword called a "flamberge" or "flame-branded sword." That's why it looks the way it does. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flame-bl…

I do like the sword's design. It reminds me a lot of the wraith blade and the double-blades reflect its dual nature. Like I said, it just seems very impractical as a weapon.

hehe all good yo.Β  yeah I'm familiar w/ the flamberge-- but funny thing is that I've never really thought about it while playing the game that the reaver was a flamberge..Β  always thought about it like it was just a physical form of the wrath blade, and that's the reason for it's winding shape.-- As for the double blades.. I'm just yuckin around-- definitely impractical, off balanced.. went more for coolness factor than functionality.. It's a video game.. the side of me that enjoys over-the-top weapons and armor.. like in WoW or GoW..

its insanely good and you know that but the lack of cuirass itself makes it look strange. At least some plate must present because , you know, thats what armor always was about - protecting chest and organs and only after that limbs.
