How do you get the fur texture? Did you use the hair and fur modifier or did you use planar mapping to get it? I'd like to work on hair and fur textures to improve my 3D portfolio.

I use the plugin (modifier) "Hair and Fur" it is very easy to use, you just take the time to read some tutorials on the net

I don't know about less realistic, planar mapping is the technique used in Uncharted 2 and it looked fantastic! It just depends on whether the artist does it correctly. When done correctly, it looks just as good as the modifier.

all I can say is that I spent less than 15 minutes to achieve the hair hamster, with the hair and fur plugin.
the only negative point is that the render takes a long time (1 hour 30 minutes for the hamster)
