It's hard to imagine ponies using weapons other than a sword or knife.

Actualy, you are wrong)) Close quarters combat weapons are even less convenient for ponies. Maybe pegasi could use some kind of blabes straped on hooves while flying, and unicorns baisicly can use any weapon. But when I draw weapon for a pony, it's always for an earth pony. And swords, axes, hammers and so on can not be redesigned for an earth pony. Because their hooves are almost always on the ground, and neck is not flexible enough for holding it with teeth and fight properly. On other hand I can imagine some kind of buck-amplifier, but not more. Best weapon for pony is long range, his\her own body or the magic of Friendship))

Valid point, but I tend to think more of how Gray Wolf Sif from Dark Souls uses a melee weapon. He wields a giant sword in his mouth, due to the fact that he can't use his paws. Plus, guns are completely out of character for ponies, at least the way I see it. Swords just make more sense to me.
