Description "But Seated upon the stump, she was startled to find an elegantly dressed gentleman reading a newspaper. He had black prick ears and sandy coloured whiskers."

--Beatrix Potter, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck

I am fairly certain that this is the first time in many years that I have ventured into the realm of anthropomorphic drawing. As you can no doubt see, this little portrait is more of an experiment--I might move it to scraps later-- but it was a lot of fun to make. Mr. Tod is just the kind of villain I cannot help liking, and 'The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck' has such intriguing, dark undertones that I wished pay tribute to one of my new favourite Beatrix Potter characters.

Sorry for the way late reply.Β  It was drawn with pencil on paper, then coloured in an editing program.

Mr. Todd is one of my favorite villains - particularly because he's from a children's story. Β The darker themes of the Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck (and the Tale of Mr. Todd for that matter, though to a lesser extent) have always fascinated me. Β I honestly think it's one of Beatrix Potter's best stories because of how appropriately it presents a mature story - including its bittersweet ending - Β to small children. Β

I really like the color pallet you've chosen for Mr. Todd. Β It's akin to his original color scheme but darker and more saturated. Β In addition, your line work captures Potters style, making this a good homage by balancing mimicry with originality.

I think Potter must have liked him too, as far as her villains go.Β  Unfortunately, Mr. Todd did not leave much of an impression on my childhood self.Β  It was only much, much later, when I revisited all the books, that I saw what a subtle and fascinating thing Potter is doing.Β

And thank you very much for your extremely kind comments, they make me wish I'd tried a more ambitious picture.Β
