Description
As Somber took his first steps into the Alpha Labs, a sense of impending dread hangs over him. Despite this, he pushed onward, knowing this might be the only way to reverse the damage that had already been done to the island, or at least stop the chaos from unfolding further.
The cold concrete floors click with every step he takes as his talons graze the surface, the sound echoing faintly through the area. He tries his best to sniff out any signs of life, but the overwhelming stench of decay and…oil? blocked out pretty much anything else that might be present. As the young Cryolophosaurus rounded the corner, he froze. Something had disappeared through a darkened doorway up ahead, something rather big. Somber strained his ears to try and pick up any sound of danger, but all he heard was the low hum that had made itself apparent as soon as he’d set foot into the labs. It sounded almost like the facility itself was breathing deep within its unknown depths.
Somber stood still for a moment, and after determining it was safe to continue, took a few cautious steps down the hallway ahead of him, getting uncomfortably close to the doorway that he thought the figure had entered earlier. As he tiptoed past, his curiosity got the best of him, forcing him to stop and take a look inside the doorway. His entire body tingled with fear, but he held firm to his position, scanning the darkened room for any signs of life.
CRASH
Somber leapt up at the sudden sound, shrieking in fear. Something big had been toppled nearby, and that meant something bigger was around. Something that could surely snatch him up and swallow him whole if it wanted, which it most likely did. Whatever was in here must not have seen fresh air for generations, meaning it had no concept of anything from the outside world, let alone how to befriend something that it could easily make a meal out of.
Thump, thump, thump
Somber’s stomach dropped; footsteps. Nearby footsteps. Something was definitely here, and he had no intention of finding out what was about to shred him to pieces. Ignoring his instincts to make a break for it back to the lab entrance and get far, far away from here, Somber darts quickly into the darkened doorway next to him, navigating the room mostly by touch and his limited night vision. He crawled onto the bottom shelf of a large metal shelving unit, quickly sliding the nearest object in front of him to block himself from view.
Thump, thump, THUMP
The footsteps grew nearer and nearer until it drowned out Somber’s own heartbeat in his ears. The Cryo held his breath, eyes growing wide as a large figure trudged into view through the doorway. It sniffed around for a moment, lifting its head up in the air, where Somber was able to make out it’s tyrannosaurid-shaped head, adorned with two crest-like appendages on either side of the bridge of its nose. It paused, turning to face into the darkened room Somber was taking refuge in, but didn’t enter. It huffed, letting out a low grumble, and moved on. The footsteps gradually grew further and further away, until Somber felt safe enough to untense his muscles and breathe normally.
“What was that thing…?” He thought to himself. But before he could remove himself from the shelving unit and progress onward, a rustle in the corner of the room had his blood running cold. He watched as another, bigger tyrannosaurid emerged from behind a pile of what Somber assumed to be large old tires, ones that were stacked tall enough to completely hide the beast’s figure. Its golden eyes instantly locked onto Somber’s location, cocking its head to the side and letting out a low sound. Somber couldn’t tell what it meant, but it couldn’t be good. A sudden voice startled the young Cryo into leaping out from the bottom shelf he’s taken shelter under.
“What are you doing here?”
Somber couldn’t sense any malice in the voice, but he knew how deceptive some dinosaurs could be. But for some reason, he couldn’t move from where he stood, now out in the open.
“Oh don’t worry, young one, I’m not the slightest bit interested in eating a scrawny thing like you. Might only feed me for about an hour, if that.” The voice reassured the Cryo. As the looming figure took its first steps toward Somber, the Cryo couldn’t bring himself to run, screech, anything to defend himself.
“Relax, I can practically hear you trembling from here. I think a little bit of light might help, wouldn’t it?” The voice sounded raspy and worn, but somehow gentle. The figure made its way over to the wall next to the doorway, using its head to flip some sort of switch on the wall. Lights embedded into the ceiling suddenly flickered to life, momentarily blinding the young Cryo. As he regained his vision, his eyes focused on the now lit figure in front of him. It was larger than the other figure that had passed by, and was covered from head to toe on nasty scars. It also had a scraggly coating of fur on its back, one that had an almost oily sheen to it. It was a terrifying sight, but its eyes were soft and reassuring. Somber took a risk and took a step toward the dinosaur, who didn’t make any moves to attack. Somber suddenly remembered he even had a voice.
“W-who are you? What are you?”
The tyrant hummed, its lips curling up in a sort of smile.
“Call me Ruth. I’m an Albertosaurus.”
Somber nodded in response. A thought occurred to him suddenly.
“Hey, I know this is kind of sudden, but you must know your way around this place, right? I’m trying to get further through this place, but I have no clue where to go and really don’t want to end up lost and starving. Are you able to show me the way around?” Somber asked sheepishly. Ruth grunted, turning away to think.
“Yeah, I know my way around, but only on these upper levels. Anything below Zone A is unknown to me, and I’m really not keen on finding out what lies beneath.” Ruth’s tone turned ominous.
“Could you at least bring me as far as you’ll go?” Somber asked. Ruth sighed, but nodded tentatively. “I can do that, yes. But just know that I won’t come for you if you get in trouble down there.” Ruth warned. Somber gulped, nodding in acknowledgement.
“Alright, come with me.” Ruth motioned for Somber to follow her out into the hallway. Somber somehow didn’t feel any better about his predicament, knowing this was just the beginning.
