Description This piece really means a lot to me, and for that reason I want to explain each part of this piece.

Title: I called it "the subtle masks we wear" because by just looking at the picture its obvious that this girl is looking into the window at her own reflection, and for some reason looks sad at doing so. I took it upon myself to explain my (the viewers) view on why she would be looking so sad. And the reason I came to was that she knew that the look she put on for other people wasn't what she really was. And I feel we all do this, we put on masks and hide who we really are, but the mirror never lies. Also, i used to word "subtle" masks because I think its obvious that the "mask" (colour) of her is very clear and not subtle at all, just like everyone else.

The colour green: I experimented with a whole lot of colours but this green just made sense to throw on as part of the meaning of this piece. I personally believe that not being who we truly are is a sign of weakness and sickness. Sick representing green and vice versa.

The whisps from her eye to her eye: I know I could've made them a little less obvious and not stick out so much, but they're incredibly important. Obviously the lines are very wavy, but they all meet eye to eye. So does that mean shes looking herself directly in the eye? Of course not. She's trying to avoid it, but when shes right up next to the mirror, its near impossible. I think this is important because again, I think we all do this. We can see clear as day whats directly in front of us, but we choose to take everyway around it to "see" it, but not view it. If we all looked at ourselves directly in the eye and evaluated what we had become, I'm positive we wouldn't be satisfied. Everyone says "Oh, I style my hair to feel good" But thats a pile of horse shit. You style your hair to impress, you wear trendy clothes to impress, you wear make up to impress.

Black and white: On the left side its clear that there's no dominant colour. Now, I again, experimented with many colours, thinking that a good idea would be for one side to be one colour and the other to be a different one, but I decided that the idea of the pure mirror wouldn't be so pure if it was editted. So I tried to put it in the most natural state I could, plain, clear and obvious. No shiny colours to distract anyone from what's there.

Background: Now I was contemplating whether I should keep the background, or just have her there by herself with the mirror. But I decided that the junk in the background showed that while everything around her is real, she appears to be fake.

Texture: The texture on the left face is clear, but subtle. Again showing that the "mask" she wears is painted on and fake. And if you notice on the right side that there is no texture and that she's purer. Again, showing that the right side is what she really is, as opposed to what she's become.

It took me a while to create the message that I wanted to out of this piece, but I think I've done the best job I can. I hope everyone can just understand what this piece portrays and I hope that everyone can understand what it is I was trying to express. My-Own-Nightmare is a great photographer and an excellent artist, and I hope that more of her photos inspire me to do pieces such as these agains, and that they inspire others to pour forth actually meaning into their pieces as opposed to useless trendwhore drivel.

This is a ver good piece with a nice explination. True we all try to find our way around the truth that is infront of us, but still end up facing it.
This kind of reminds me of an old saying. "People were only given one face, but it is their choice to have many more."

Good job.
