Description Beleg Cúthalion

“One only was there in war greater,
more high in honour in the hearts of the Elves
than Túrin son of Húrin, tower of Hithlum,
even the hunter Beleg of the hidden people,
whose father was the forest and the fells his home;
to bend whose bow, Belthronding named,
that the black yewtree once bore of yore,
had none the might; unmatched in knowledge
of the woods’ secrets and the weary hills.”

-- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Lay of the Children of Húrin

The second drawing I managed to finish this week. Beleg is one of my favourite elves. I've shown him here as one of the greatest trackers that ever lived. He's tracking the orcs that captured his friend Túrin, perhaps. I have no idea what he thinks to decipher from those straws, but hey, he's the great tracker, not me! I ended up drawing Anglachel the same as with the Túrin illustration (now in scraps: [link] ) even if I swore it was not my final design.. oh well. Also Belthronding should probably look bigger and stronger, but I wanted the whole bow in and the edge of the paper was there, and..

Anyway it's my view of Beleg.. in my mind he looks just like Legolas -- only bigger, meaner and stronger. After I had sketched this I had to do a Legolas sketch too.. just to make it clear to myself how exactly are they different. I don't know when I'll finish that one though. This is the usual deal: HB pencil and mech. pencil, printer paper and Photoshop colouring.

Now.. back to work.

Almost exactly how I imagined him. Awesome details too.

It seems you and I both have the idea that Beleg is just "a bigger, meaner, and stronger" version of Legolas.

Beleg is my favorite character from "The Children of Hurin". Once again, it made me cry when he died. You did really well.

hey, about the poem... how do I find the entire lay of the children of hurin? I have the book 'the children of hurin' (and I looove it), but I wanted the poem. and the lay of leithian too.

anyway, about your drawing: it does look cool, but I still spot a few things that bother me...

1. his face is too... long... I can't explain it right, but it should be rounder.
2. his foot near the sword: it's way too big! just look at the other foot and you'll see...

Anyway, this is a good drawing... you've got technique... I love the work on his clothes and on his bow and sword...
he's supposed to live fighting in the woods, so his clothes are all stichted up together... that's really cool ^^

I'm drawing Beleg at the moment and wanted to see how other deviants see him!

This one feels very personal to you in some way. The care and depth into it feels noticed. The accuracy to which you draw seems to become increasingly more apparent and definitely higher quality. Have you ever thought of doing commission work or working for White Wolf or WOTC?

aautio In reply to HermyEmma [2007-04-07 20:08:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Beleg was always one of my favourite characters. I liked drawing this one.. it was also an experiment in extensive crosshatch shading, which on the other hand is quite tedious.

Hhmm.. I wouldn't mind doing commission work, but drawing is mostly a hobby for me.. I draw things that I have inspiration for (..wherever that comes from ). I don't know if I would do so well if I was assigned a lot of work and subject that I wouldn't find so interesting. And at moment I'm quite caught up with my "real work" too..

Very nice work here! I like his intent expression...he is determined and thinking quite seriously on what these signs mean if anything. The pose and figure and very well done. The only thing I notice a little off is his forefoot...it seems a bit smaller than the back foot. Otherwise, you always impress me with your ability to maintain anatomical correctness in your drawings. Congrats!

I love Beleg. You captured him perfectly. Your attention to detail and facial expressions are uncanny, and the way you portray movement in your poses; you can see him just momentarily kneeling to examine the tracks, but his muscles are still ready to push off and continue on his chase.

Very fine work.

Forehead seems a little large though.

aautio In reply to laurelena [2006-02-05 22:04:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, that's exactly what i tried to capture with his pose!

Hhmm.. you might be right, it does seem a little disproportionate in comparison with the rest of his face. Also, i thought i nailed the proportions in the sketch stage, but it wasn't until i had drawn his hand in detail, that i noticed the right arm was a bit too long.. i tried to do everything i could, but i couldn't completely fix it. I'm loath to touch it up digitally, since it's a pencil piece.. had it been digital, i would have just moved it.

And yes, Belthronding could habe been bigger *laughs*.

Anyways, great drawing, the design of Anglachel is wonderful...

Whatever, I'm looking forward to see even more stuff coming from you!

aautio In reply to Toradh [2006-02-05 21:20:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.. glad you like them.

Yes.. but you know, "size doesn't matter.." ..it's the weight of the pull that matters. But still, i was always thinking of an English longbow (almost as tall as the archer himself) with Beleg. This one is smaller, but i think it looks strong anyway.

I have mixed feelings about Anglachel.. i basically have two different ideas how i'd like it to look. This demonhead-decorated bastard sword is one and a simple, black, undecorated two-handed sword is the other.. can't decide which one i like more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toradh In reply to aautio [2006-02-07 12:22:57 +0000 UTC]

Why don't you use one idea for Anglachel and the other one for Gurthang? Okay, you can't make a two-handed sword out of a bastard sword or the other way round, but I meant you could use one way of decorating it when the sword is still named Anglachel and the other one when it's reforged... Or have you already another idea for the design of Gurthang?

I really like this one! Anglachel looks perfect (I think you've got a talent drawing weapons...) and I like the shading a lot. Bad thing about the edge of the paper, that didn't let you make a bigger bow, but well, it doesn't make the picture look any less impresive. One just has to love Beleg...

aautio In reply to meteoro-nayade [2006-02-05 21:10:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I'm quite happy with it too, Beleg is truly a tragic character.. And thanks for the comment on the weapon design. Part of me still thinks it should be a very simple-looking two-handed black sword with straight crossguard and no large decoration, but somehow i end up always drawing that bastard sword with a curved guard and demon-heads.. Funny that.

aautio In reply to Snatchy [2006-02-05 01:13:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, if you look closely, you'll see his ear IS pointed, not round. Personally i'm not too sure the Elves are even supposed to have funny ears.. Tolkien never wrote their ears being any different from human ones (except with keener sense of hearing) -- indeed, he makes it clear that Elves and Men are basically the same species. I have gone with the common belief and made their ears pointed in my illustrations, but i see no point in underlining the difference or making the ears huge.

I will add my thoughts to this
I always thought that those elves who stayed in Middle Earth would be more hmm... massive, than those who went to west.

Speaking of drawing - I love the sword design

Thanks.

I haven't got around to drawing any elves, but I see no reason why their ears should be pointed.

This is a good composition, but I would suggest increasing the tonal contrast (especially by his right leg), and you should have made the footprints less obvious.

aautio In reply to Swimmingpool [2006-02-05 22:23:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think pointy-eared elves are a common fantasy art cliché that doesn't really have to do much with Tolkien and his Elves. It's the eyes he specifically mentions as different.. and even those only as having that "bright" quality.. "the light in their eyes" -- whatever that means (as a kid i always drew my elves with glowing slanted eyes that had no pupils, but that looks way too freaky! And i don't think that's what Tolkien meant, either). I have drawn their ears slightly pointed, but i see no real reason why they could not be like human ears.. i guess it's just that i'm not that good at drawing them so execptionally beautiful, that their being Elves would be evident without that small "confirmation" by the ear-shape usually associated with fantasy elves..

I often draw with just HB pencil, which results in quite flat tonal contrast. I increase it in Photoshop, but went quite easy with this one so that i would not burn some of the detail.. I might check it later, thanks for the feedback.

Hey love the picture dude, second The only way we know that Tolkiens elves had pointed ears is that when the artist for the book asked him what did the elves look like he said "There ears should be slightly pointed, and the Hobbits ears should be even more pointed"

Still love the Beleg-Turin story too

No problem.. and i was talking about Tolkien's Elves, obviously. Most RPG elves, like those of D&D, definitely have big, pointy ears. I'll have a look at your work.
