When I was a kid I used to watch the tv seris "Fame (yes the one with Debbie Allen, Gene Anthony Ray, Carlo Imperato, Erica Gimple, Lori Singer, etc.) with my aunt (who was at the high school at that time and had a crush on gene Anthony Ray ). It is probable that many of the younger readers don't know that series, I for one watched each episode twice yet cannot remember it very well. There were, though, two episodes I still remember very well: "the wizard of Oz" adaptation (istant classic! Loved professor Sherwood as the evil witch and Shorofsky as the wizard... ) and one of those "don't use drugs" episodes that were ever present in the teen targeted tv series of the 80s and 90s (dunno if they still do it as I don't watch "teen-targeted" series anymore...) against use of drugs. In that episode there was this girl who befriended Bruno Martelli (the most talented music studend of the school), thing is she had an addiction to cocaine. Bruno tries to make her quit the drugs, but she continues using it, and there was a scene, near the end of the episode, when she is preparing some lines of cocaine on a table, cutting them with a razor balde and he knocked the table over in anger yelling at herr. The thing that really shocked me was her reaction: she started crying and moaning, crawling around the room trying to recover the drug from the floor.
Why have I told you this tale? Because for a boy of seven, learning the degree of self degradation an addiction could lead you to is something that remains branded in your memory. I - of course - have seen even worse scenes in movies, televion and real life, but when I wrote this scene this was the first thing that emerged from my memory, surpassing even the things I caught myself doing when I run out of cigarettes...
Seeing the pathetic show an an addicted person makes to satisfy his addiction makes me feel sick, andEwan's reaction reflects not so much my emotions on the matter but those of a 7 year old boy watching this girl (who would died of an overdose at the end of the episode) crawling around the room licking cocaine from her fingers which she had just picked off the carpet.

I hope I was able to render somehow the intention I had when I started drawing this page.

This is a fan comic based on the Bioware's videogame "Dragon Age: Origins" and expansions. All characters and characters design except those not fitting the game belongs to Bioware, Ewan is designed on a customizable Player Character so he doesn't belong to anyone but as concept to me, the story is mine so it's not official, no copyright infringement is intended so don't bother me about it.

Never watched Fame but I remember it, the ones I remember with the drug episodes were ones like on a lot of the cartoons.

How your mage is NOT addict to lirium after using a ton per boss?

I always took the "power in, power out" idea, where mage burn the lyrium off quick-smart, and can overcome addiction if careful. Templars generally quaff the potions at meals and it sinks in and rots the brain. that's my head canon anyway.

You portrayed it perfectly, methinks. I wonder if one can get over lyrium addiction?

without consequences you mean? I think so...

Cullen's face in panel 4 is amazing! I can see what Ewan's trying to do for Cullen; the only problem with addiction is Cullen has to want to do it himself. Maybe tough love will help. Or, someone who doesn't care. XD

I remember Fame! I don't remember that scene, since I probably didn't watch the episode, but it sounds really powerful. And true, from what I understand.

Ha! I still have that "Wizard of Oz" Fame episode saved somewhere in an old VHS tape!!!. I can't remember the drugs one, but somehow the one which impressed me was the one about anorexia, maybe because I've always been worried about my own weight.

Now back to the page, what can I say? I still don't think Ewan is acting as a jerk, you'll have to try harder. He's doing what he has to do, even if Cullen may jump at his throat if he finds some strength.

The episode should be in the first three seasons, (as Lee Curreri left the series afterwards) but I can't find it either... Or maybe I'm remembering wrong and was Danny, not Bruno (I found a epidose in which Danny has drugs problems in seson 1...), well whatever.

And, hey! The doctor spoke! Ewan's right! Although I'm with Galagraphia in some things: Cullen didn't choose to become addicted to lyrium, and some of those things are said just out of pure cruelty. He's pissed for wat Cullen did at the village (and at the tower) and he's not very forgiving in this situation...

Is he doing it out of hate? I can't blame him, but he's doing the right thing. Sometimes you must be hard even with people you love , so you force them to react.

The Anorexia episode was a late one too, because the anorexic girl was one of the new ones (can't remember her name). I can't tell. I loved Danny, but I can't recall the drugs either (hehe, I must still have some stickers from those teenager magazines I used to read those times...)

I realized I'm not faster than anyone else, I'm just drawing everyday because I have time and will, ad a page takes me from three to five hours. The only thing I am maybe faster at - I think - coloring because I cheat.

Oh! Now I want to kick Ewan. But just a tiny bit, because I understand why he does it, and I would do the same if I was in his place.
I feel sorry for Cullen though, and I'm very curious about the way you plan to develop him. It's quite interesting to have those three at the same party and you're a great narrator. I can't wait to see what happens next x)

development of cullen is one of the thorns that hurts my side in this story, because I think is a bit too fast. I'll see in the next chapert if and how can fix that.

I don't have a great opinion on my fre-hand drawing skills, so if I wanted to make this enjoyable I HAD to build a solid story behind...

misi-chan In reply to Abadir [2011-01-19 00:00:01 +0000 UTC]

Don't say so. Your drawing is actually quite right and you're always trying to do different poses, which is more than a LOT of authors can say, including myself. This only will lead you to improvement x)

Abadir In reply to misi-chan [2011-01-19 07:04:29 +0000 UTC]

Eheh, thanks, but this doesn't improve the general opinion I have on the matter. I know what I'm good and not good at, that's why I don't take commissions (while graphics should be my job) and if I ever will, will be only coloring and layouting.

Uhm, well... maybe BECAUSE this should be my job (graphics, not comics) I'm so hard with myself...

Anarnaxe [2011-01-18 20:54:08 +0000 UTC]

I, for one, like the fact that Ewan is being a jerk, and not just to Cullen. It makes him far more believable.

Too often you see a character face a dangerous situation, or confront someone or something from their past and they are smiles and sunshine. That's it, there is barely a hint of anger or any other emotion, just a sense of "haha, it's over now so I'll be off before there are any consequences." But people aren't like that, people can become so sick of the crap lain before them that they cannot help but act out in a jerkish manner. That kind of character is far more believable (and far better written) than one who will laugh it off.

So, thumbs up from me. I'm liking this comic a lot.

Abadir In reply to Anarnaxe [2011-01-18 21:54:36 +0000 UTC]

Second it That hurt, but someone had to say it...

I've always wondered...Circle mages use lyrium too, don't they? But they don't seem to suffer the same effects templars have to deal with (you know...when they become junkies and need their shot...) Lyrium is like a drug, at some point, but it doesn't affect to mages, or at least we're not told :m Correct me if I'm wrong ^^U

PS. It's just me or Cullen looks more like Gregoir in every new page? XDDD

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Abadir In reply to emedeme [2011-01-18 21:02:59 +0000 UTC]

I think Lyrium has different effects on people according to their magical abilities: if dwarves and tranquils are immune to its effects, mages shall take benefits from it without being addicted to it, as it restores their mana - ability that non-mages doesn't have. Also, mages uses lyrium potions while is not sure in which form templar uses lyrium. If it's lyrium dust or raw lyrium the effect can be quite different. I haven't given to this much of a thought, anyway, as I have simply assumed mages are mostly resistant to lyrium addictive effects, otherwise Sweeney, Irving and Wynne should be drooling lunatics or highly senile as the templar in front of Denerim chantry...

emedeme In reply to Abadir [2011-01-18 21:48:11 +0000 UTC]

Um...makes sense. Maybe they use it to restore their mana, but they're kind of inmune to the side effects, perhaps?? :S

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Abadir In reply to emedeme [2011-01-18 21:57:25 +0000 UTC]

that's my theory, although I think lyrium actually makes a mage feel a bit "high"...
Not totally immune, though, just resistant to the addiction.

You know, I want to kick Ewan. Hard. With a boot. Into his head. Sorry, but he really deserves it.
Templars don't choose to become addicted, they are forced to do it, it's not fair to blame someone for the choice he didn't make. It's like to make fun of children who were born with deformities.

Abadir In reply to Galagraphia [2011-01-18 20:41:04 +0000 UTC]

I said Ewan's is starting his "asshole phase".
But in his partial defence I can say he's not blamiung him for his addiction, he's just plainly torturing him. Though Cullen didn't choose to become addicted, he chose to perform an appendectomy to ser Scott, hunt Jowan down and attack Anders and the children. He's clearly a mad man, but after a crazy man tried to kill me and my friend I wouldn't be much into excusing him because he's mad...
Anyway next page shoudl add more informations about it.

Court discharges people who have committed a crime while suffering from posttraumatic syndrome, so your charges don't count! It's not Cullen's fault either.
