I'm not sure really, but are you taking away to show highlights with a kneadable eraser/putty eraser? It looks as though you've covered the paper pencil, (kind of like what I do, except its more even, whilst with me its not. I need a bigger pencil : P) Then where you want to show the highlights, you've just erased them.
Nice drawing so far by the way, I like the architecture.

well that's it ! ^__^ I covered the pencil on paper with my hand to do soft light then as you said erased some parts to do the hard lights.
