here is a question semi-unrelated to this: How do you get the background clear? that probably made no sense....?

welllllll, since I couldn't find the photoshop disk to reinstall it after my laptop was cleared(bawww), I used Gimp for this. But you could use Photoshop for this as well
There is probably a much easier way to do this. I copied the scan into a new,blank, picture, that was the exact same measurements as the scan. But you have to make sure that when you create a new file, you make sure that the background is transparent.Whenever creating a new file/picture, a window should pop up about the size and background. Under the part about the background, select the option that says something about a transparent background.
Copy and pasting automatically creates a new layer. But if you are not using a scan, make sure to make a layer on top of the background layer.
Now this is the long and boring part. On the layer with the picture you want, use the eraser tool to erase every part that you want transparent. So your main goal is to erase every pixel that isn't part of the picture you want to show.
Once you are done that, save it as a GIF or PNG.
