Not pessimism Aaron... This is being realistic.
Oh! I am reasonably happy and go about my life as all of us do.
But my soul sees things without a rosy veil !!
I think I have seen enough of life and humans to know that optimism is an imposed condition.
A brain that thinks and a soul that sees can never be happy .
Tell me one writer , artist , thinker of any repute, who was "happy"
Look around yourself without self imposed optimism and then see the world !
New Life ? Now this is a whole new debate !
The only thing I would like to say is that a new life is not a toy.
We are accountable and responsible for the new life. It is our responsibility to provide a good surrounding for it .
And most of the water on earth has become contaminated .

Are you saying that truly intelligent people see/know/understand the truth and therefore are unhappy? Optimism/happiness is a choice, or maybe what you call a self imposed optimism. People who see and know the truth and remain happy or optimistic I would say are the intelligent ones.
For some, yes it's a veil of ignorance, but I don't think for all.

Yes I am saying exactly this. I have yet to meet a person who sees and is optimistic. Darkness is always there. When you light a candle, the darkness goes away. Hence it is the moments that inject joy . It not a permanent state.. And I think hundreds of writers and philosophers and psychologists have said this. .... And optimism ? What is optimism ? Optimism is saying "Things will improve!" , "There is a better future " ,, "Self or Society will prosper" .... In other words it means that you are saying "Presently things are not good. " "The present situation is bad ".
A glass half full does not mean that the glass is not half empty. If you keep looking at the stars and walk, you are bound to trip and fall. Realism is not so bad

To me optimism does not necessarily mean that things or something is bad now, only that it can be improved.
But I will agree with you to a certain extent. I don't think there is some certain truth,or truths, seen that causes depression. I would rather say, and this ties into your comments about insanity, that they merely see the world differently than most. Which for multiple reasons could lead to depression.
