What you have to understand about the dynamic here is the Joker is a psychopathic, evil, nihilistic and murderous monster with an indifference to pain and subtle suicidal tendencies. Also, he gets bored...so when in a situation like this he doesn't see Batman's relentless and merciless assault as something to shy away from...in his mind it's confirmation that he 'loves' him too. Hence why he's got such a happy smile.
Of course I could be wrong and he could be bricking it really.

Nah, you hit it on the nail! ;D
Joker's a masochist and a sadist, this is just playtime for him--and hell, he probably considers whatever's happening as a "win" since he got Batman to let loose so much.

Have you ever read the Joker's Last Laugh arc of comics//crossover event from 2001 by any chance?
[spoilers]It starts out with Barbara giving a long speech to Nightwing about hey, why not just kill the Joker? Letting him live only endangers more people. Nightwing is opposed to this but as it goes on, Joker escapes from prison, Jokerizes nearly every villain in the DC universe, and Tim is thought to be dead (eaten by A jokerized Killer Croc). and then Nightwing is like yeah... first Babs, then Jason, now Tim? This has gone too far. (Not to mention all the cops and ordinary citizens Joker has killed over the years). Nightwing finds Joker and beats him up/strangles him to death. But then of course Batman steps in, has someone revive Joker (it's never told who) and gives some speech about how they can't cross that line, can;t kill, that's the police's job, blah blah blah. This is the same arc where Joker attacked the President so I don't think the law would be opposed here... pretty sure Nightwing would be given a medal of honor. I know a Joker death would never stick in DC comics for long... but man, should have left him dead for a few months at least instead of only for a page. [/spoilers]

ADDICT-Se In reply to silvanoir [2014-09-11 02:16:38 +0000 UTC]
Man, I've heard of that arc but I've never actually read it!
I know a few a my comics reference it--at least I think it does--like Bruce Wayne: Murderer/Fugitive, it's definitely on my to-read list >_>
Man, what I would give for a comic-arc where one of the Batfamily kills the Joker and he stays dead for a longer amount of time. IT would be really interesting to see how it affects Gotham and the Batfamily psyche O_O
Recently I've been consumed by anything Darwyn Cooke related, and have been reading those (New Frontier/The Spirit/a bit of Catwoman)--then all those variant covers released O_O I… I really wanna collect them all, but that's sort of a dumb idea since I don't follow any of those comics and it would be SO much money. I kind of just wish I could get a bunch of Cooke posters or something X'D

Murderer/Fugitive came out shortly after, so it would make sense for it to reference it. The tie-ins to Last Laugh are easy enough to find (in the dollar bins) but the main six issues are harder to find. I happened to find an old, used trade. I recommend it, even after I spoiled the major plot points for you. I read it after I was spoiled about the major plot points and still enjoyed it. Joker is awful without it becoming gritty.... there's almost no blood in the entire thing. Back when DC still had big dangerous things but could still be cartoony and fun (I miss the very early 2000s era DC).
A lot of the tie-ins are unecessary add-ons, but the essential ones are Birds of Prey 36, Nightwing 62 and 63, and Robin 95 (definetly get those 4 is you plan on reading Last Laugh)
The cover for the last issue makes me think of your drawing (black eye and all) , which is why I brought it up: static.comicvine.com/uploads/s…
They only ever let Joker die in elseworlds. And it's usually Batman or Superman who does it. But I'd like one of the batkids to do it, for the reasons Nightwing did in LL.... to avenge his batbros and batsis' who have suffered at the hands of the Joker. Or if Jason and Babs could team up to kill Joker together that would be poetic justice. I guess that sort of happened in the Batman Beyond movie (with the Tim/Jason amalgam killing Joker).... but I want it to happen in the comics.
Darwyn Cooke- maybe they will be posters! The bombshell pinup variants got turned into a calendar, so maybe those will be a calendar too. I like his variants, especially the Aquaman one. I actually feel this way about a lot of the DCnU comics... I like the covers but don't care about the content. I haven't read New Frontier but have watched the aniamted movie of it. And read the first part of his Catwoman run. As well as his part of SOLO.

I'm gonna have to go on a quest to find the Last Laugh >_>
It definitely seems like a good read!
And early 2000s DC is definitely my favorite--SO many good stories! Even if the art is a bit strange at the time, haha.
Ooh, I remember that cover! I'm sure there was some subconscious part of me that remembered it while I was drawing XD
Jason and Babs finally killing the Joker, that would be super interesting--I wonder what would spur the team up and take down!
Man I hope there are posters that come out O_O I will gladly throw my money at them.
I love the New Frontier books <3 there's one in particular that focus on Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, and it's absolutely adorable.
I haven't read his part of SOLO--unless that's the same comic that was later put in the Batman Ego collection? I know there's a single issue that focuses on Slam Bradley in that, as well.
I also just bought some of his Parker works, and, well, I love it. But it's so expensive. Q_Q

The early 2000s DC had some very cartoony art. The hardest art for me to get into was the art on IMPULSE. The stories are cute. but his hair and feet are soo big. And as much as I love the original Young Justice, the amount of time their legs were drawn like horse legs bothered me. But at least they were actively trying to appeal to kids in the main universe which they haven't done in a long time (you can tell by not only the art and stories, but the amount of ads for candy and kids clothes versus comics now which are trying to appeal to college aged guys). It looks like DC is going to try to appeal to the younger crowd again in the main universe with the upcoming Gotham Academy and the Batgirl reboot, but... eh... I wonder if it's too little too late? If they really want kids back they need to make it the main titles, not the side titles... like how once upon a time Justice League was cartoony and kid friendly (both in animation and comics) but really isn't anymore. I am going to give the new Batgirl a chance, though.
Yup, the Slam Bradley comic was part of his SOLO , but there was more too (including a really cute true story about how he got into art as a kid in the first place... and a really weird story about a guy in love with vacuum cleaners drawn in a 50s advertizing style).

I feel the same way about Impulse, haha XD I have a couple trades with some Impulse in it, cute stories, but jeez.. that art. Especially those feet.
I'm glad there are a lot more cute styles being used for younger audiences now XD
I know I'll definitely be collecting Gotham Academy! But I doubt many kids will, it seems like it's not really advertised for children, too, even if that's the target audience
I think I'll give the new Batgirl a try, too--I love the outfit! Plus my boss said he was interested in reading it, and I'm slowly trying to convert my workplace to comic readers >_>
On a different comics note, when I was in Portland, I managed to find Batman Cataclysm and the old 60s Batmanga for super cheap! So I'm super happy about that. Overall, I think I spent around $200 on comics in the two days I went into the city @_@ I've never done that… but, my friends and I deemed it "Treat yourself" weekend, and we saved a bunch, so that's good.
Still so happy I can finally read the prequel to No Man's Land!

I finished reading all of Impulse a few weeks ago and I'm ending up giving away a lot of them. It got more and more cartoony as it went. In plot and art. In the final issues he temporarily gains magic powers and makes dogs talk and cars fly and I thought "I'm too old for this"
All comic companies need to do a better job at getting kids to read comics again. They need to advertize outside out comics news sites and tumblr.
There are comic readers in my work, but they collect old school Marvel stuff (really old stuff, like 1960 fantastic four and avengers). I'm the only DC comics fan. I mean, I like Marvel too, but I don't have any knowledge of comics from before the 1980s other than X-men. Though oneday one of the Marvel guys I heard saying something about Superman, Lex Luthor, kryptonite bullets, and Wonder Woman and I wanted to jump up and down and go "me! me! talk to me! I have OPINIONS!" but he was in a different part of the building and I couldn't leave what I was doing to talk to him.
Have you seen December's Batgirl cover? she's bedazzled! The solicit implies it's not the real Barbara, that it's an impostor, but I think that would be hilarious if she showed up in the Batcave sparkling. Bruce: "Barbara that's not stealthy or practical." Babs: "Shine bright like a diamond, Bruce, shine bright like a diamond". www.toonzone.net/comics/solici…
Awww yiss, Cataclysm on the cheap! reading that helps NML make more sense for sure. I've never spent that much at once at a shop, but I have spent $100 in comics on Amazon in one go. a few times. heh.
By the way, have you seen the Gotham TV show yet? it's actually pretty good. I think you'll like it.

Ahahaha, I know how you feel about that. I own a couple of those DCAU Justice League comics, and on the cover there's a big sticker that says "for kids!!"
Well, I still read them they're so cute and well-written.
But--I've definitely read some comics where I realize that, yup, too for for this, and then I pawn it off on younger people.
Speaking of kids and comics--holy crap, I saw my little cousins at the wedding I went to, and.. I am so out of touch with the younger generation @_@ my youngest cousin, I think he's eight, has a girlfriend, and holy crap he knows way too many curse words. It's kind of jarring (of course, he also has a terrible family life, so that helps explain his behavior). Especially since I was spending my time reading comics and watching anime.
Aaw, that sucks! I hope a Superman conversation manages to spring up near you soon. Who knows, maybe you can get some of the Marvel fans into DC, too! Although… old school Marvel… don't think I could do that, and I definitely don't know anything about pre-80s Marvel characters. I could see it as interesting if the conversation was about how ridiculous those eras are, I mean, both DC and Marvel had hilarious comics about really strange things. That would be fun to talk about.
My coworkers sometimes ask me questions about Batman or some other comic character, and I always have to warn them that once I get started I don't tend to stop. Once that had me try to explain some of Grant Morrison's work.. that was a challenge. X'D
Ooh, now all I can think about is how pretty Babs' batarangs would be to go with that costume! Seriously. Bringing the fab into the batfamily.
Aah, I'm sure I'll do that on Amazon XD
Although, in my defense, part of the $200 also went to gas and food. But yeah, mostly comics. There were just so many comic and book stores @_@
Although I somehow spent less than my friend.. so kudos to me!
I really liked the first episode of Gotham!! I saw it the day I came home, Gordon's just so adorable. Plus I love that Renee, Crispus, and Bullock are in it I'm excited where the story will go. What do you think about it?

a girlfriend at 8? yeesh. at 8 I was still playing with coloring books and stuffed unicorns. Kids grow up too fast these days. and there's no way to hide the world from them. all the content all the time on tv, computers, phones.
Yeah, and the 80s comics I know of are the DC ones. The only thing I read of marvel were 70 to 90s X-men, and then a small handful of standlaone titles from the early 2000s to present day (like Runaways). I have no knowledge of the Avengers outside of the movies (and no real interest in reading the comic versions, old school or modern).
I'm the same way about Batman. I have had many people make grumpy faces at me as I talk about how there was more than one Robin. (I don't think even Grant Morrison can fully explain Grant Morrison).
Just watched the 2nd episode of Gotham tonight. Loving the show so far. Except for a few things... like how ham-fisted they make refrences..... Riddler is the most awkward. And don't like they Pamela Isley is now "Ivy Pepper". But loving the focus on the cops, mobsters, and corruption. Loving that it has Renee and Bullock and Crispus. The kid playing little Bruce is perfect, I see a great acting career for him in the future. Little Selina is also really awesome, especially in episode 2. Jada also seems like she's having a lot of fun playing the evil Fish (spoilers: I like her line about not having a lover, just a guy she keeps around for "exercise").

So I just finished the craziest work week ever, and I woke up this morning and got the late birthday present from you!
This week is awesome now. Almost as awesome as Static Shock!
Thank you so much!!!
A girlfriend at eight is just crazy to me, too @_@ pretty sure I was still into kids cartoons and scared of the dark, but, yeah, everything is accessible now and children are just forced into a more adult atmosphere.
I don't really have a want to read the Avengers, either--I feel they're pretty straight forward, though, maybe that's why I don't care about reading more about them. (Well… I still love the Hawkeye comics, though. But that's his solo run, not when he's in a team.)
I hear good things about the Runaways! At least my friend really liked that run, but she also really loves X-Men XD similar taste!
Hahaha, my brother often gets that look whenever something remotely comic-related comes up and I start yapping. But.. it's just so fun to talk about :'P I would really love to see Grant Morrison try to explain his own comics--I think he sort of tried with his documentary, but.. that was just weird.
I really don't understand why they changed Pamela's name--that makes absolutely no sense to me. It was fine before…? Did they think the watchers wouldn't get who she was or something…? Ah, man, and the riddles…
And I feel the same way about the cops and mobs aspect. It makes me so happy when there's a Falcone mention, or when Renee and Crispus are on scene <3
I'm loving Bullock's "I don't give a shit" attitude, too, especially in contrast to Gordon.
Fish is awesome! I hope they keep her as long as they can, she's a great character and very interesting XD

You're welcome! I think you'll get a kick of of Legenderry too. It's a steampunk take on old TV show/ movie/ comic book characters teaming up against evil (although the final issue doesn't resolve everything and that annoyed me a little). The best part is "the six thousand dollar man" (instead of the six million dollar man) because he's so damn enthusiastic about everything no matter what happens, even though he's got only one eye, one arm, and no legs (though he does have steampunk cyborg limbs... which don't last long).
The Avengers do seem straight forward. I don't think there's much backstory there besides "superheroes form a team". I read vol 1 of Hawkeye though and loved it. I'll probably track down the rest of it at some point (my comic shop didn't have any today). I also read a bunch of Black Widow trades and comics recently. Some of it good, some not so good, one really bad (skip Black Widow Deadly Origin... I really hope they don't go with that for her solo movie, as it mostly revolves around a guy who is a creepy uncle figure to her... just... eww). Her newest solo series is really good, though. As is "The Black Rose"... though Black Rose is so, so sad. It has good art and is well written... but dark... and sad.
I definitely recommend reading at least Brian K. Vaughan's original run on the Runaways.
No one seems to get why Ivy is now Ivy Pepper. It's silly. Nothing wrong with Pamela.
Falcone and Maroni seem to be major players, at least in this first season. As it should be if they're doing a Gotham before Batman. I think Fish will stick around at least through all of season 1, she's a conniving survivor (I do wonder who the new girl she hired in episode 4 is supposed to be. She's got fishnets... but I don't think she's supposed to be Zatanna or Black Canary since she's a villain-in-training. Maybe Magpie?)

I like that they gave Vampirella CLOTHES. Honestly if she wore more and was always a nightclub owner who was protective and gracious to her customers and brutal to any who would harm them like in Legenderry I would read her main comic. As is anything I've seen of other Vampirella comics has her in that ridiculous red bathingsuit and so incredibly badly written (as it's little more than an excuse to draw pinup girls and dumb men who drool over them).
Scarlet ...( I'm not sure either) well the redheaded girl, right? There's a twist to her. You'll see as you read it.
The best part about the series is spotting all the old movie/tv/comic characters. There's even a guest appearance by Godzilla on one page (the characters wisely choose not to fight him). The worst is that it really needed one more issue at least to tie-up the plot.
I never got into Fables (tried to read some scans but didn't get into it) but I've heard good things about it.
I was only able to find the first trade of Hawkeye. still looking for the rest. Marvel is releasing a hardcover omnibus of the whole series next year for $99 O_O I don't have THAT kind of spare cash (who does???) .
Black Widow Deadly Origin had both bad art and bad writing. Black Widow Itsy Bitsy Spider was written somewhat ok (it was by Devin Grayson and Greg Rucka, both of whom I've liked some of their DC work) but had the kind of shiny "sexy" art with women twisted all the wrong ways (I know I've seen the cover and a few of the pages being mocked on "Escher girls" and "Scans_daily") for the majority of the story... the second artist one the last part of the story was good.
Black Widow "The Name of the Rose" (oops, I called it Black Rose... it's name of the rose) had beautiful art and was very well written (but sad).... and could work for an origin movie, a really sad one... that requires Bucky to play the supportive boyfriend (which they haven't set up in the movies sooo... hmm... suppose they could switch him out for Hawkeye).... also don't know if will-make-poeple-cry will be what they want for a solo superheroine movie. The newest series is very good, Phil Noto on art... I really liked the first trade "The Finely Woven Thread"... she's pretty much independent in it doing spy stuff aside from working with Maria Hill.
just as a comparison, Janauary's cover to the new series: oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/s… (look, she looks actually human)
The back cover to itsy bitsy spider from the early 2000s: static.comicvine.com/uploads/s… (fighting with their eyes closed in "sexy" poses... sigh)
There are more Black Widow stories than that but I haven't read them... mostly because even the summaries look bad. So I'll stick with collecting the new series.
I liked the new She-Hulk series too, even if the art is very odd. There's something appealing about quirky stories about a big green superhero lawyer woman (with no one calling attention to her greenness).... mostly taking the cases of the former wives and business partners of supervillains that got screwed financially by said supervillains. Same kind of quirkiness and flat-color art and down-to-earth stories with just enough action and comicybookyness that made the first Hawkeye book enjoyable, I think. Seems the last issue of She-Hulk will be in January though.
The more they show of the new girl on Gotham, the more I think she'll either be Magpie or an original character.
What do you think of the latest DC and Marvel movie news and rumors?

Man, I would so read Vampirella if every cover and panel didn't make me feels so uncomfortable… I kind of feel the same way about Red Sonja, but I hear the new run of her is really good. I'm still not going to read it, though… just can't get past the clothes!
I'll take a steampunk Vampirella any day, though. That was fun, and classy C:
I wish there could have been more to tie up the plot--I still haven't read it all yet, but I'm sad it won't feel like a real ending :C
I haven't read Fables, either--I probably won't, it's just not my type of story. But I'm happy my roommate likes it, and I love her retelling of all the stories. And she's really enjoying Legenderry, so that's also good news!
Have you heard of the werewolf comic that's going to be released by DC? Wolf Moon, I think? It looks interesting, I might collect it!
Although I have to admit I'm excited to get Arkham Manor and Gotham by Midnight to see what those are about...
Holy crap… I don't think I could ever shell out a hundred bucks for a Hawkeye omnibus… who can afford that? Barring the 1% anyway. Jeez, does it come with a free bow and arrow? XP
… because of it did, then I might consider getting it, haha.
Deadly Origin's art… nooo… that doesn't look good.
Phil Noto is making up for that art with his awesome style, though. It always looks so light and fantastical while also maintaining realism <3
Hahaha, I really enjoy the new She-Hulk series! Especially the covers, Kevin Wada is so fantastic at painting interesting characters. I wish he'd do sequential pages 3
I heard that Leslie Thompkins is going to be on Gotham soon! That makes me so happy!
I' both exciting and scared for the new DC movies--I really like Jason Mamoa, I think he'll be a fantastic Aquaman. I actually enjoy Ben Affleck, and I think he's a good actor when there's good writing. And the other cast members for the other characters like Wonder Woman and Cyborg seem really awesome.
So fingers crossed? But to be honest, I wasn't really a fan of the Man of Steel movie for various reasons (especially Jonathan Kent. That was just the stupidest way to die and no one can tell me otherwise, haha)
Sooo… Yes, I'm excited, I love the cast and the movies they're preparing to do, I just hope it's executed properly and the writing is okay!
As for Marvel, I still really enjoy their movies, and I'm sure I'm really going to enjoy Age of Ultron!
And, man, I am so happy to see more glimpses of Hawkeye and Black Widow. Especially Hawkeye. I just really like that character.
I haven't heard too much on the Marvel front besides that, actually...
What about you?

I feel the exact same way about Red Sonja! If she's human and fighting with swords on the ground, exposing that much skin is not a good idea. Luckilly in Legenderry, when she shows up later on, even when she still has the chainmail bikini she's wearing other stuff on top of it too. static.comicvine.com/uploads/s… I wished they'd covered her stomach though.
Spoilers for Legenderry: they catch, kill, or put a stop to all the grunt soldiers working for the bad guys but don't catch or kill any of the bad guys themselves and that bugged me so much. If it was an ongoing, it wouldn't bug me as much because you know the society of villains need to be free so the heroes can foil ore of their plans but this was a limited series and I feel like it needed a more solid conclusion than a standard superfriends episode, you know?
I haven't heard of the DC werewolf comic. *googles it* hmmm if it does as well as werewolves as American Vampire did with vampires, it will have my interest. I'll wait till more of it's out and there's reviews before I give it a shot.
No free bow and arrows with the Hawkeye omnibus. I think DC does that sort of thing more... like the court of owls mask with the court of owls books. I have some Teen Titans omnibuses from DC but those were worth it because they were only around $60 a piece and retouched the art from the 80s on nice glossy pages (having the original singles would mean that old musty smell on yellowed paper with colors that didn't always go in the lines). But Hawkeye is a newer comic with no retouching needed so I don't know why it's so much!
the link I showed you of the bad Black Widow art was to Itsy Bitsy Spider (in which she fights a younger blonde woman who wants to claim the black widow title). here's a page from Deadly Origin: 2.bp.blogspot.com/_kz41n4gY-6I… the guy can draw men well but all the women;s faces (and bodies) look very off. and the most infamous page of it.... eschergirls.tumblr.com/post/24… I don't think he understands how women's spines work.... we can't twist our entire bodies around like owls twist their heads.
Ooooo! Leslie in Gotham! Lil Bruce has been a bit dark and mostly a shut in, maybe she can team up with Alfred to get him out of the house more.
I didn't see Man of Steel but everything I've heard about it made me not want to. Vaguely hopeful for Bat VS Super though, especially since there;s Wonder Woman and some rumors of Carrie Kelley being robin (since it would be an older Batman).
I have great confidence in Aquaman because I like the actor. Though I get annoyed with those who said they didn't care about Aquaman until it was announced that he'd play him. I LIKE blonde Aquaman and his comic has been one of the few good series in the DCNU.
I hope for the Green Lantern reboot they use John Stewart instead of Hal. Hal is kind of boring (the only thing I like about him is Carol). John's the fan favorite due to the JL cartoon and would add diversity.
I also hope Cyborg uses more of his old story and not the DCNU story. Cyborg isn't Cyborg to me without his ties to the Teen Titans and best-friendship with BeastBoy. If they can animate a walking tree and a talking racoon sucessfully in Guardians of the Galaxy there's no reason why they can't animate a green boy who can turn into animals in the movie that won't be out till 2020.
As for the Marvel Movies...
it's annoying that there's no date given for Black Widow's movie (only that there MAY be one someday but "not anytime soon"). DC can announce up to 2020. But Marvel is just sitting on that, even though there are several writers who want to write a script and the actress said she'd do it. *sigh* Yet they're still going ahead with Antman even though literally no one want to see that movie, even actors and directors dropped out of it. There's also going to be a Dr.Strage movie but that character never interested me (he always looked to me like "what if Ras Al Ghul was a wizard?"). They've also been sitting on the script to the Runaways movie for over a decade.
Not happy with the rumors I've heard about Captain America 3 either. Ironman was going to make a small guest appearance but now he's going to be a major character. And there's rumors it will loosely adapt Civil War. I like Tony but this should NOT be his movie. We need a Steve/Bucky reunion and more of Sam and Natasha being awesome Not more of Tony and Steve arguing like they did in the first Avengers movie.
and there's all other kinds of crazy rumors floating about. Possible Bruce/Natasha romance in Avengers 2 (PLEASE NO... I like either Nat/Steve, Nat/Bucky, Nat/Clint, but not anything else). Possible Nick Fury origin movie (that would be good!). The war between Marvel studios, Sony, anyFox over characters in which Marvel comics is actively trying to sabotage the altter two but not creating any new X-men and cancelling the main fantastic 4 comic. Also because of the war between studios, Quicksilver and scarlet Witch can't be referred to as mutants, their dad isn't Magneto, and they don't even have a gypsy mother anymore... now they're English kids who were experimented on by Hydra, BOO.
