Description This is a novelization of the first part of the final boss battle in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. I do not own Sonic, Shadow, Silver, Solaris, or any of the characters mentioned below, all rights belong to SEGA, etc etc...

Somewhere between universes, within the past, present, and future, hanging within the void amid dimensions, it dwells.

Solaris.

Once a Flame of Hope, now a God of Time, and soon to be everything in the universe, it lay, silently absorbing everything into its form. Every conceivable past, present, and future was becoming a part of it now, though its very presence had changed every one of those into shadows of what they used to be.

Once, it had resided silently within the gap between dimensions, its worldly form stable within the Flame of Hope that resided in the plane most would call “reality” – but the spectacular hubris of the Duke had changed that forever, forcing it into authenticity, splitting it apart… and even the merging of Iblis and Mephiles had only recreated a painful mockery of what it once had been, a being that could not survive entirely in the plane of reality.

And thus, the fabric of reality itself would fall, so that it might live.

Yet…

Even now, it saw something truly disturbing in some possible futures… a handful at first, but swiftly growing more numerous, and now factoring in the pasts and presents as well: a reality in which Solaris did not factor at all, because…

Because…

…and now the reasons were coming, in the past, present, and future, all three tearing towards Solaris, their bodies glowing with power and their hearts with sheer will.

For an instant, Solaris felt a strange touch of incredulity.

How?

How could these insects, these pathetic, cowering wretches, possibly factor in the death of the God of Time? It would have been foolish to anticipate no resistance at all, but how could they?

…and then it saw the answer, and Solaris’s confusion turned into a burning rage. It was those emeralds, the Chaos Emeralds once more, collected from the ruins of reality, and their power granted to those who stood before the god now…

But this was not the end; Solaris still saw more realities in which it played the ultimate role – and thus, the God of Time turned upon its foes and faced them with all the resolve of desperation and rage, of a being that has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Silver, it’s your turn!”

“I’ll take care of this!”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Within the distant future, Super Silver will tear at Solaris with a determined grimace on his muzzle. His voice will ring out across the shadows, his threat to the god as solid as anything in existence…

“This is the end! Prepare to meet your doom!”

The creature will seem truly bizarre to him – almost like some great crystalline bird, sprouting immense antlers and two armored appendages, a form seemingly more at home in some ancient carving than anywhere else. For an instant, he will feel a flare of hope – it will seem so frail; perhaps it will be defenseless against such an attack as his, and will simply shatter upon his intrusion?

But no – even at his approach, the thing will begin to move, and before it will open a handful of deadly rifts in time and space. From these, there will tear a great host of boulders – massive chunks of pure, solid matter in its basest form, indescribably dense and fearsomely dangerous at such speeds. The boulders will rocket towards Super Silver with all the speed and lethality due to them, projectiles that could derail a locomotive with just a passing blow…

And now Dr. Eggman’s voice, magnified over some cobbled-together loudspeaker, will fill the darkness of the void…

“That body of light is the sign of a super-dimensional life form! Standard attacks won’t work on him – he eats dimensions for lunch… but there should be something that’s anchoring him in this dimension!”

But this is irrelevant to Super Silver. Though this will be the first time he has used a super form, it remains far from the last time he has faced something monstrous… taken a stand against impossible odds… and used the horror’s own power against it. He will knit his mind in concentration, his hand extended to receive the masses… and as one, their progress will halt as though colliding with some great invisible wall. Super Silver’s telekinesis, augmented a hundredfold by the power of the chaos emeralds, will simply hold every boulder that comes his way… but he faces no mere dumb beast this time. Solaris, an intelligent creature, will stop firing the stones. Perhaps it will simply notice their ineffectiveness, or perhaps some rudimentary memory from Iblis or Mephiles will surface… regardless, Solaris will stop this attack, and from the base of his form will fire a beam of pure, colorless energy directed straight at Super Silver…

…but Super Silver will see this coming, and using every bit of his mental strength, will fling the boulders back at Solaris… the stream of power will intercept a handful of the masses, but the vast majority will slip around the blast. Solaris will raise one reinforced arm to defend itself…

With a tremendous crash, the boulders will slam into that arm one after another, exploding and flying apart with such impossible power that even the God of Time will cry out in pain, a strange mewling howl that will make Silver’s fur stand on end…

…but as the debris from the boulders spirals off into the void, Silver will give a shout of triumph, for a massive blob of burned, crystalline substance will float away from one of the horror’s arms, and what will remain of that arm will be slender and feeble…

He will hurt Solaris!

As he glides about his target, he’ll swear he can hear Sonic’s voice coming from some other part of the abyss…

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

“It’s all you, Shadow!”

“Understood.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deep in the distant past, Super Shadow sped about the strange life-form with a calculating eye. His crimson eyes roved across the single damaged, weakened arm that Super Silver had left… or would leave? He shook his head.

Time travel.

He had to stop thinking so linearly.

“A super-dimensional being… heh. This might even be a fair fight!” he murmured.

Solaris turned, following this bothersome gnat as it whipped about at dizzying speeds. A blast of raw energy tore from its form, and shot past Super Shadow with the force of a hurricane.

Super Shadow almost smiled.

The power of the chaos emeralds flowed through his veins as it did for no other. His heart burned like a furnace with its power, and he knew that while Solaris’s command of temporal energies was second-to-none, his heart burned with something more…

(Chaos is power enriched by the heart)

And now he felt the chaos energy growing all around him, flowing from whatever remained of the shattered thing that had once been reality. The power was within him, a part of him as much as any limb, and now he guided that power into his hand, readying himself for what would come next…

A hail of solid matter rocketed towards him, tearing through the void with impossible fury, and now Super Shadow tore around them, past them, over them, and now he was too close to miss…

“Chaos… Spear!”

A dozen jets of power shot from his hands, and homed in on Solaris’s form. Solaris raised one appendage again in a desperate gesture, and with a tremendous crack, the spears needled into the strange being’s arm…

A second tremendous report echoed across the void, and that terrible mewling howl sounded across the darkness once more… but the damage had been done. Now, both Solaris’s arms lay limp by its sides, and the God of Time was clearly flagging…

…and now, from some far point in the void, Silver’s voice rang out over everything…

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Good luck, Sonic!”

“OK!”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

His glowing form shining brighter than ever, Super Sonic soars across the expanse of the void towards the God of Time.

“All right, it’s my turn!” he shouts, his voice giddy with his newfound life and strength. “Let’s have some fun, Solaris!”

Solaris is still injured, but far from helpless. Even as Super Sonic rockets towards the thing, Solaris cuts loose with everything at its disposal. Speeding chunks of matter, burning energy rays, all blaze a trail across the void and slip harmlessly past the young hedgehog… they’re all too slow, just too slow!

Blazing through the void at impossible speed, Super Sonic slips past the boulders, the energy beams, everything Solaris can throw at him – and with a single tremendous crash, he slams directly into Solaris’s chest…

…and the creature’s head and armored torso simply crack… and fall away. A dozen glowing shards of armored hide drift off into the void, leaving their former host behind.

What remains of the creature still moves, still lives, still absorbs dimensions into itself at an exponential rate – but now it is weak, its defenses have fallen, and though it fires at its tormentors again and again, it remains vulnerable… and now it feels their full wrath, chaos spears and ramming strikes, and its own weapons turned upon it, tearing mercilessly into its unyielding form… until finally, with one last mewling scream, it falls into the shadows of the void, leaving nothing but darkness and silence behind…

Super Silver is the first to break the silence.

“Is it over?”

Super Shadow shakes his head. “No, it’s not over yet.”

Great work, I must say.  From the Solaris-point-of-view to the different past, present, and future tenses, you've done an amazing job.

I'm trying to think of what to say to give this masterpiece the praise it deserves, but I cannot think of any other then wow. This is amazing. Honestly one of the best Sonic fan writings I've seen on the internet.

That might be interesting...

I can see the tagline: "Sonic '06: Sorry about that. It should work this time."

or "Sonic '06: The soundtrack was good last time, right?"

or "Sonic '06: remember Crisis City from Generations? That was pretty good, right?"
