This is realistic to the point that had to check and re-check several times if this is a photomanipulation. So let me congratulate you, you have fooled me! You seem to have those textures down.
I cannot imagine how much time this takes!
Se let me see if I can find anything I can comment on nonetheless. Prepare for some really unfair nitpicking.
I find it interesting that you limited your Deviation to a height of 1024 pixel, because that way I couldn't see the two most obvious features that you could improve if you want me to really think this isn't a digital painting :
- The hair seems stiff. It lacks detail, at least that would be my guess. Interestingly, the smaller hair on the brown horse (the rightmost hair that stands up) is totally fine. It's most notable in the white horse's top hair, something doesn't quite fit there. The lighting might be weird.
- Some of the outlines are too sharp. Mostly the throat - and especially the brown horse's throat seems to be a bit irregular.
This was also hidden by the JPEG compression dA added when you chose to display it at this size. That's fine. But the part that bothers me a bit about that is the smooth mist in the background of the original has loads of artifacts in the resized version.
Speaking of the background, what a great colour palette! Do you choose your colours by eye or do you use a colour tool on the photo reference?
Personally, for balance's sake, I would have lessened the smoke emenating from the white horse. It is much more visible and there seems to be a lot more of it than of the smoke from the brown horse.
I can't say that I would get anything of what you did there even half as good as you did. It must be magic.
Keep up the good work!

Oh, that's interesting! You use GIMP, right? Do you use the colour picker tool? I've found it very difficult to pick colours from photos because the pixels vary so much from their neighbouring pixels, especially in brightness and saturation. Do you use the "sample average" function?

yes i use gimp and i understand what you mean. i dont use the sample average function. i pick the colour that matches the best overall colour. when i have a base of the colours filled in i start detailing it and then i choose my own colours, with the colour wheel but also picking from the drawing. That way you get a drawing that still fits together and not some randon colours splashed together. sometimes when i think i go offtrack i go back to the photo to choose a colour i want and feel that is missing in the drawing.

Since you mentioned that you tried some new things in order to improve yourself, I first of all took a look through your gallery and also to your reference photo. And I have to say you really did some great improvement with this one! Your work is almost indistinghuishable from the photograph, you only notice a bit when you view it in the download window. So: Awesome job, this "textured" look as you call it really brings your work to a new level. You should definitely keep on using this technique
So, more to the image itself: Seeing that it is a drawing challenge, I would not have much to critique actually. It is a beautiful study, you mentioned using different types of hair, etc. and the outcome really is rewarding, and also seemed to help yourself quite a lot drawing-wise. Artistical-wise, I might have a few improvements to suggest: I do like this dissolving of both horses into smoke, it emphasizes the tenderness of the moment very well. However I have a feeling the background might actually be a bit to dull, resulting in a strong emphasis on the white horse, since the difference in colour is quite much stronger. It might be better to use the background to frame the whole moment, the meeting of them both, by using something simple, still, yet with a bit more diversity. Perhaps some very simple forest background or something like this could help. Or maybe even picking a background colour that is in a good contrast to the colours of both horses might be already enough. But seeing that you made this in context of the challenge, I like it as it is, since you could experiment and reached with this study what you wanted to reach
So, really great work, keep it up

Oh my god, I just cannot believe that this is a drawing and not a photography. It is so realistic! The white horse is maybe the one that looks a little unrealistic with a few misplaced shadows and the hair being too grey, which makes it look like a little bit too dirty. On the other hand, the brown horse is very well done! The shadings, the shapes, everything is what we would see in a real horse. You do have an incredible talent. I like how you made the bottom of the horses slowly vanish- the only thing that bother me is that on the brown horse side, it is a bit too pale and goes away very quickly. It would have been much better if it was lighter.
The background is really nice, I love the little effects of smoke, but I think the parts over the horses head is maybe a little too light, as if the horses emanated it.

I am sorry but it isn't a photomanipulation. I did use that photo as a reference, but it is mentioned in the description.
as the painting, it is al painted by me, I used a grit and I picked colors as a base for it.
