I adore this painting. I think it is very well done. The pattern all over the face is just striking and beautiful.

Wonderful job!

I love how you color-shifted the warm tones to the cool tones. Especially from one shoulder to another. I think I would've gone mad trying to keep all of the tones and lines straight. Wow.

thank you. my secret is hours of cutting painter's tape into interesting shapes. it does take forever, but it makes the painting part much more intuitive.

being nosy is half the point of da. the worst someone can do is ignore you. you can learn a lot by being curious, and most people dont mind.

I love this style. It kind of reminds me of [link]

The background looks very textured. It is interesting to see how the pattern seems to subtly repeat itself in the texture - I see down below you said you'd painted over it (I so understand doing that).

Only thing that kind of catches me is the definition around the chin and mouth - the shadow makes it kind of blend in and hard to see, but on the thumbnail it looks just fine.

Overall, the pose and the colors are very eye-catching. I wasn't sure about the orange at first, but it really works - perfect contrast to the mauve shadow and the red and yellow in the hair.

hehe, awesome! i love ~LostMyBand ... one of his watchers, for sure.

yeah... the amount of time in creating that texture... lol... it was supposed to be multicolored, too, but it just didn't work well.

hmmm... thank you for the honest criticism. much appreciated.

thank you!

BrooklynMachineWorks In reply to aeravi [2007-07-02 15:37:21 +0000 UTC]

Sure! ...I like the color, composition and movement of the piece. ...The only thing I'm not crazy about is the background. To me it looks like you spent a lot of time on the portrait and just put a background down to fill space.

...but overall, nice work!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aeravi In reply to BrooklynMachineWorks [2007-07-03 13:25:44 +0000 UTC]

lol... i spent a lot of time on the background, too... and then didn't like it and painted it over.

thank you for the honest feedback. i really appreciate it... nice is good but not as helpful as constructive criticism.

Back in the turn of the century when I was in art school we had a painting teacher that would throw you out of class if you said "i like it" or "it's nice" during a crit. ..he would get SOOOO mad. I do enjoy the direction you have on this work. I personly wouldn't mess with it anymore, but move this "style" (hate using that word but I haven't had any coffee yet) onto your next work.

Gonna go have a peak at your gallery, then get coffee, then I must PAINT.

Lots of things... I'll have to keep flipping backwards and forwards to examine.. so this may sound disjointed.. oh I'll do in point form..

1. The colours.. it is a great orange .. and the orange and purple (or mauve) are opposites or near opposites (split complimentary) on the colour wheel and therefore have a striking visual impact and comparison when juxtaposed on the support.

2. The face is fascinating ~ the facial expression that is. She looks serene and almost Grecian.

3. I like the light and shade.. I always love the interplay of light and shade on a face and if I paint portraits I like to do this myself..

4. The use of the two large areas of negative space on either side of the head as compositional elements.

5. The overall composition.

6. The technique seems to be well executed.. the precision and detail of the intricate pattern requires a high level of skill to do properly.

7.. Last and probably most importantly ~ the pattern on the face make the whole thing unique..intriguing and interesting..also I like the way the pattern changes colour from mauve to red in the different tonal areas.

8. Oh and on full view the texture is fantatic.. I love texture.

Will that do? I think this might satisfy.. the "advanced critique encouraged" line! PS: I absolutely mean every single word.

wow!! i advanced crit!

1-yes, i chose the colors specifically for that reason
2- she's based on my little sis
3-
4-i had a pattern there, too, but it was way too much!!
5-
6-
7-thank you... my husband liked it better before, so it's nice to hear somebody who likes it after the pattern
8-i texture, too i suppose you can tell...

you're very sweet! thanks!

.. there is no reason why you can't have one painting with a pattern and one without.. or do a series if you have the time...

.. don't thank me for advanced crit.. I like it when I find good work on here..something that is worth the advanced crit!

..btw what sort of paper or support did you have to achieve that texture pls.? Happy Liz

aeravi In reply to icemother [2007-05-30 06:04:32 +0000 UTC]

good ol' canvas the texture in the orange is achieved by layers of paint that i painted over, similar to what's in her face and body.
