Hey, colored pencils don't hate you! I was actually never a big fan of them until I got some instruction on how to use them properly. One of the main techniques is to start with the darkest colors and shadows and then layer the lighter colors over it.

The white vein effect is negative space, or areas that I didn't color. It just takes some forethought, precision, and very sharp pencils.

Actually, it feeds on Prismacolor pencils. Its favorite flavor is black. I know this because it ate most of my last black pencil. It can't be a very filling diet though.
