Description Laurence stood in the courtyard behind the closing door, rain running down his sleeves and his face like blood; stood and said aloud, "O God, I wish I had not done it."
/Naomi Novik: Victory of Eagles, chapter 12/

Probably the most poignant line in the whole series - at least it grabbed me and held me tight until I drew it. Mind you, this was my first and probably last try at drawing a soaked-through shirt. Bloody difficult!

I got VoE earlier than I expected, and read it quickest of all Temeraire books. It was indeed very dark, and indeed like the "OotP" of the Temeraire series: the fifth book, and the one in which the main character is the most depressed. But while in OotP I didn't feel Harry's depression wholly justified, in VoE I did feel Laurence's justified. The poor guy, he has lost almost everything and everyone he ever loved and has only himself to thank for it. After this, I think book six has to be brighter. It just has to.

Should anyone be interested, I've recently submitted a short post-VoE fanfic to ffnet, a rather light-hearted one. You can read it here: [link] If you do, please be so kind and leave a review.

I'm fairly certain he was wearing a jacket in that scene, but nevertheless this work --and the /emotion/ of this work-- were /absolutely/ on my mind while reading it. Especially since I had been foolish enough to see this before reading that book. (Now that I have read it, I'll have to follow the links to your fic.)

Victory of Eagles just about defines the term "heart-wrenching" in the third part, if you ask me.

I'm not sure yet how I picture Laurence's appearance. This is a totally plausible version to my mind, though; he looks great. And by great I mean... well, heart-wrenching.

Thanks. Laurence gave his coat to the mad king, and I somehow imagined he didn't have a jacket under it, only a shirt.

The whole VoE is very sad and it makes my heart wrench to see how lonely Laurence is all along, even when he has Temeraire and some of his friends around. I hope book six will be less depressing.

Thanks. My heart was so heavy throughout reading VoE, I seriously hope the sixth book will be more light-hearted, after all this torment Laurence deserves something good to happen to him.

Wow, I think I love it. You captured the emotion perfectly! Oh man. I just wanted to cry with him when he was able to finally "break" his mold, so to speak, that he had been in from the beginning of the book. To know that he was only doing what was right and seperate from all his comrades just makes it that much more painful...

On a lighter note... lol wasn't General Temeraire just brilliant?

Thanks, glad you like the pic! And yes, General Temeraire was great and very hilarious. But to me it seemed that it was this "repetentance" scene that shoved him even deeper into despair, making him realise he had done wrong in becoming a traitor, and it was chapters later Tharkay's line "What are you doing, Laurence?" and his reply "Killing soldiers" that made him realise that his "treason" had not been entirely wrong after all.

It's a really nice try for soaked clothes...It must be hell to manage it...

Plus, I love his beard-thingy...It's too good and realistic...Really nice work....

And...You can tell HP fans from their vocabulary...The fact that we use words of JKR as a constant and true words is really freaky...I found myself using 4 HP words in one sentence, speaking too a no-HP-aware person...And he was like: "What? she-had-lost-her-mind-for-sure..."

And I was: "oh, I was just speaking Harry..."

What kind of HP words do you usually use? I'm curious. Btw, glad you liked his soaked shirt and beard.

My pleasure...

I use more Muggle,Hippogriff,Amortancia,Gringotts and Weasley...And Death Eater as a swearing...

Walking on the downtown with my best friend-another fan for life- and you know, we're like: "Look, too Ronish", "This is huger than Hagrid" or "Selfisher than Lockhart"...

LOL. Whenever I see a red haired guy, I tend to say "look, a Weasley", but that's all, I guess. I don't use other HP words in everyday life. Oh, but I do, just remembered! Whenever I hear that my mum got and sms or she hears that I got one, we tell each other: "you've got an owl".

Yes, my fanfic does have spoilers for book five. Book five came out in summer of 2008, as far as I know. And don't worry, L hasn't lost T. But he's lost almost everyone and everything else.

AgiVega In reply to Hanjeu [2009-04-20 07:13:40 +0000 UTC]

It is an AU history story setting in the Napoleonic wars. What makes it AU is the fact that the battles are not only fought on ground and sea, but also in the air, on dragons. The main character, Will Laurence is at the beginning of book one a naval captain, who by accident becomes the companion to a newly hatched dragon, therefore has to abandon the navy and become an aviator. The series is mainly about Laurence and his dragon Temeraire's relationship, their many adventures. It's absolutely wonderful, the story is very exciting, the characters are extremely well developed, you simply have to love them. Peter Jackson too loves the series and is planning to film it.
