In order to survive in the highest spheres of society, having the ability to behave according to the nobility’s expectations is essential. To accomplish this, some develop a chameleonic personality, and, if they’re truly intelligent, like Emily, they don’t end up tangled in it.
Nevertheless, as every single person, Emily is defined by a variety of traits that are very hard to disguise. Let’s begin by what stands out at first sight, two common features of every noble lady: elegance and grace. Most of her gestures are so smooth that anyone would think that they were rehearsed uncountable times… and that would be a correct presumption.
Another peculiarity is her seemingly unnatural passion for neatness, though calling it an obsession would be an overstatement. That and her refined taste in fashion are the reasons of her humongous collection of gloves that cover her hands almost every single day at almost every hour. But not only her taste in fashion is sophisticated, she’s also very picky when it comes to meals, drinks, transport, lodging and several other insignificant aspects of everyday life, including people.
Speaking of daily routine, since she took control of her husband’s businesses, the dormant determination restrained by her strict education finally found a way to be channelled. In addition, she usually thinks that everyone works for her; hence she might often sound bossy or vain, no matter how charming her polite smile is.
Every person’s behaviour also presents, to some degree, contradictions, and Emily’s is not an exception. Despite of her highborn pride and her disdain for the working class, she feels a strong empathy and compassion for children whose lives are plagued with adversity, so she helps at orphanages from time to time and also donates to them a generous portion of her monthly income. Many times had she pondered on adopting a child, but she always ends up sabotaging herself by inventing mundane excuses that prevented her from doing so. Also, as it was mentioned before, Emily is an intelligent woman, but recent events in her life forced her to visit the slums frequently and, not being adapted to that world yet, she’s an easy prey for any scammer or criminal who is clever enough to outsmart her.

It is an enjoyable spring afternoon, the sun barely hides behind the clouds and a pleasant breeze caresses the green hills where a four-year-old girl and her grandfather run, jump and laugh together. Where are they? It doesn’t matter. Suddenly, as if a gloomy memory tormented his mind, the old man stops playing. Although his blue eyes show melancholy with a hint of anguish, his smile still shines in his face. “What is it, Grandpa?” the little girl’s eyes open widely. The man kneels and asks her to come closer. She obeys, her curiosity growing stronger. One of the man’s hands dives into one of his pockets and emerge shortly after, holding a black key. “Listen carefully Em, this is a gift… this is the key to a treasure” the old man whispers, still smiling. The little girl blinks and asks “A treasure? Like the ones that pirates seek?” The man giggles. “No, it’s not that kind of treasure… it’s…” He tries to explain but he fails. A four-year girl wouldn’t understand. “However, as every treasure, it needs to be found. Promise that you’ll protect this key… don’t give it to anyone. Ever. Not even to your father.” The smile is gone, but it comes back after a moment. “And never stop looking for the treasure.” The girl grips the key excited, yet confused. “I promise, grandpa”.
That is one of Emily’s dearest memories: one of the last times she saw her grandfather, one of Koben’s most famous inventors, lucid.
Despite the rigorous strict education she received, Emily enjoyed a comfortable childhood and teenage years plagued with entertaining social meetings and activities of the high society, such as hunting. Since she was fourteen, her father taught her how to shoot different kind of rifles and the girl turned out to be a gifted shooter so she always stood out during hunting weekends. Since then, shooting has been one of her favourite hobbies: even during closed season, she’d practise with artificial targets.
As her beauty bloomed, marriage proposals poured down even though they were continuously rejected by both Emily and her father. The girl didn’t want to marry any of those brainwashed mannequins and her father was secretly expecting for a suitable candidate who could save the Walton family from the financial mistakes he had made.
Fortunately, fate presented the perfect candidate: Jeremy Wallace, a brilliant young bourgeois who, at the age of thirty, was already owner of factories and a promising future. Although Jeremy wasn’t popular among the nobles due to his unorthodox financial and social ideas, Emily was captivated by his personality and his wit while her father was charmed by his patrimony.
At the age of eighteen, Emily got married. The most important part of their relationship was that they educated each other. Emily shared with her husband the strategies of moving in the vicious atmosphere of nobility and Jeremy educated her in the world of business, into which Emily dived with passion, fascinated by the taste of power.
By the fifth year of marriage, their love fell ill. Little everyday quarrels about minor things became more destructive discussions before they noticed. The main reason was Jeremy being uncommonly irritated by the content of wax-sealed letters that arrived every week. One night, their love received the coup de grace. During a rowdy quarrel, Jeremy attacked one of Emily’s weakest points: children. He accused her of being sterile and blamed her for not having an heir to his prosperous financial empire. In the midst of an uncontrollable fury, Emily threw him out of the house.
Jeremy moved to Linhythe, where he stayed for almost two years, until he received a letter from his wife forgiving him. The day before his return to Koben, a wax-sealed envelope arrived at Emily's residence, but she didn’t read it. The following day, she received a note from Jeremy: “Meet me at Strutz Park, 9pm. I’ll tell you everything.”.
That night at the Park the stabbed corpse of Jeremy was found and, next to it, his wife in state of emotional shock. The doctor informed that Emily wasn't wounded so, once she calmed down and finished replying to a routine interrogatory, she was let go. After returning home, although devastated, the widow decided to read the letter that had arrived the day before. It was a love letter addressed to her husband; without thinking twice, Emily hid it: if found, that letter would certainly frame her for the murder.
Months later, investigations were suspended due to the lack of new evidence and Emily being diagnosed with disassociate amnesia, which made every interrogatory fruitless. Even though justice was willing to bury the murder in oblivion, nobility wasn't. Uncountable rumours spread about Emily and all of them had something in common: she was guilty. In an attempt to put herself together, she moved to Song-Lu, where she made a new friend: Johannes Fleischer, a retired member of the kobener army whose passion for guns was easily transmitted to Emily. Johannes taught her everything he knew and trained her as long as her stay in Song-Lu lasted: five years. By the time Emily returned to Koben in order to fully retake the reins of her business, she was already much more than a skilful shooter.
Back in Koben, not many remembered her, but the ones who did barely recognized her. Energy sparked in her eyes and her haughty attitude left no doubt that she was back to stay. During the redecoration of her residence, she came across the crystal box containing the key that her grandfather had given her and the love letter addressed to Jeremy. What had her grandfather hidden for her? What happened during the last years of his life? Who killed Jeremy? Was it her? Had Jeremy a love affair? What happened at Linhythe? Countless questions flooded Emily’s mind, but she was certain of something: she would find the answer to each and every one of them, no matter what.
Additional info:✤Emily is left-handed.
✤Her grandmother on her father’s side died of a heart disease that is presumed to be hereditary. Thus, when Emily was a little girl, she was subject to numerous experimental medical treatments in order to detect or prevent said disease. Those treatments were of different nature and most of them weren’t pleasant at all. Little Emily developed cleithrophobia due to those traumatic experiences. No one diagnosed her with the disease back then.
✤Gambling is definitely her strongest vice; once she begins, she simply can’t stop. That’s why she endeavours to avoid it at all costs. The games she most enjoys playing are card games.
✤Her guns were imbued with elemental wind magic in order to reduce their recoil. Emily also made some mechanical modifications in order to improve their firepower and their rate of fire.
✤Classic music is definitely one of the things she enjoys the most. Even more, she also plays the violin… lamely. The worst part is that she practices from time to time, thus breaking any kind of harmony in the environment.
✤ Political view and opinion about the war:Being traditionally educated and living surrounded by Koben’s relentless progress made Emily a loyal supporter of the Emperor. However, she’s strongly against the war with Miras Kingdom in view of the damage that it's already causing to her business: the call to arms deeply affects labour force availability, commerce and stock of supplies. War usually means economic and production crisis, so the game of power changes its pace and its barely existent rules blur: a right decision could mean an impressive gain of influence and power while a mistaken one could easily lead to the financial ruin. Emily is ready to play the game and only the gods know how far she will go to win.
✤ Fighting Style:As expected, being a sniper means that long-ranged combat is preferred, but in Emily’s case, it is a must. She’s very vulnerable at melee range for her knowledge in physical combat is quite limited and she literally can’t hold a sword properly, let alone brandishing it. Therefore she counts with a variety of gadgets that allow her to escape in case the enemy manages to close distance. Nevertheless, said gadgets aren’t always reliable…
Obviously, she doesn't carry guns on her all the time. However, when she wears her casual or elegant dresses, she uses a walking stick with a concealed single-shot gun, just in case.
Relationships:NPCs:✤ George and Elizabeth Walton: her parents. Emily holds a grudge against them for having cut ties with her after Jeremy’s death. Nowadays, George tries to get in touch with her, but Emily ignores his letters.
✤ Timothy and Henry Walton: her elder brothers. They have never been on the same page, but at least they offered an obligated hand to their sister after Jeremy’s death. Nowadays they’re barely in touch.
✤Harland F. Walton: Grumpy beloved uncle. Emily admires him for having turned his back to richness and comfort in order to follow his father’s steps as an inventor. He also loves her very much, but that doesn’t mean that he always treats her like if she was a brat. Just like he treats the rest of the world.
✤Patrick Walton: Her uncle’s adopted son. He’s quite clumsy but nothing can swipe a smile from his face. Emily grew fond of him and nowadays they share great confidence and enjoy annoying Harland together.
✤Jerome Miller: Emily’s accountant and lawyer. She trusts him blindly for their friendship goes back to their childhood and he has proved his loyalty uncountable times.
