This looks excellent, the smoke trail from the cigarette makes a nice touch. Did you intend to put a little city street in the background?

Yes, but it was a quick sketch so a lot of things were just put there without too much thinking or planning.

Sketches do that. I suppose that is the purpose of them, as well as brainstorming ideas.

The face and head make quite a nice portrait and would stand out well as a detail.Β  Maybe something to blow up and develop as a separate exercise.

Below head the tonal modeling and shading suffers from inconsistency in the interpretation of light.Β  The right thinking is there for both direct and indirect light effects, but it is not carried through effectively. 1) Opportunities are missed to reinforce the shaded side with spotting/cast shadow, which is important to framing the light side.Β  2) The tones are mushy, so they blend indiscriminately to make ambiguous statements.Β  You know about consolidating near tones and clearly separating light and dark - it's just a matter of making sure to do it.Β Β

The pose would read faster if the raised forearm and hand broke the silhouette.Β  The shade helps.Β  A break in silhouette would help even more.Β Β

I would trace this up on overlays and exercise popping forms with spots (cast shadows) and tones.Β

I only had 15 minutes and no plan on drawing in a first place. So it is what it is basically Quick sketch for a birthday boy as a gift on a spur of the moment.

Critique is a counsel of perfection.Β  The idea is to take from it what one can.Β
I understand well that we work with imposed limits.Β  Conditions don't allow for perfection.Β  It is what it is.Β  It goes without saying and needs no explanation.Β
I would encourage focusing on solving problems, instead of justifying them - on the process, instead of the product.Β  This is why I offer recommendations to get more from the experience by doing overlay exercises.Β  Β  Β Β
