Description Yet another returning monster from my original small series of monsters. BUBBA!

Now Bubba returned as I keep trying to think of that giant gravity sauropod and how to make it work. Safe to say, I don't think the sauropod is going to work. Not at this point in time.

Sketched out a lil of this and that, and finally I returned to Bubba. Things took off from there. Whale Kaiju are not unheard of, but there aren't too many either. Most are based of Orcas, which are a dolphin, and others are part of that whole "Gorilla Whale" joke that goes around. Others are whales that have arms and legs. Well I didn't want to go that route. Too expected and as Tyrantis already expressed his opinion of how it seems to be cheating just to give any creature a humanoid traits like arms and legs to kaijufy it.

So I kept Bubba the same as far as being a whale. No arms, no legs... Flippers only. Since I'm keeping the base, I had to come up with some other stuff to make this one stick out.
No mystery that I got the idea from Leviathan, the new species of Sperm Whale. In fact, Gilarah was the one that goaded me into it. But the old Bubba wasn't really all that interesting. Sperm Whale with Hermit Crab Barnacles. Good start from what many tell me.

Working from that was easier then I anticipated. I gave him an armored, ax-like head, and some armored scutes. Mainly made from carotene, like a Rhinos horn or human fingernails. It is a mammal, after all.
But there is more.
The Anchor Hermit Crabs return as well. Close relatives of Hook-claw Hermit Crabs. They come back as well, but there not alone. Along his tail are a parasitic species of Jellyfish that act like Remoras, which feed off his skin, other parasites that try to make anchor on him, or anything that passes. How many Jellyfish have made that role? None, that's how many. NONE.

Powers are still in the works, but I'm keeping the Ultrasound attack. Might be more aggressive toward humans this time around too. And to state, he may be the largest kaiju in all of DoM to date and ever will be... maybe. He IS a whale, after all.

Much, much, MUCH better than the original!

I love what you did with his head! It's so much more distinctive now that it has that thick armor, and I'm absolutely loving those little crater things lined up three in a row between the ridges of his snout. The barnacles on his body are another nice touch that really lends him some character.

That said, I think he could still use some polish. His jaws look a little thin. Now, I know sperm whales have thin lower jaws, but their upper jaws are still pretty thick - and you could probably beef up that lower jaw a skosh too just to be on the safe side. His body and flippers also look a little small compared to his head - again, I know sperm whales have big heads, but the rest of them is pretty large too.

wow, Bubba be popular. What Baws(boss).

I may just very well widen his head, changing the "Ax Head" to a "Mace Head". Ever see Deadpoolrus's fan art of him when I just started out? THAT type of wideness.
Though, I'm iffy on it. Mainly because the Ax-Head is just sssooo... well, you already praised it.
Many also want me to make the rest kaijufied, but I don't know what exactly to do to the rest to him that wouldn't hinder his movements.

TyrantisTerror In reply to AkityMH [2012-01-15 22:21:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, axes do have pretty wide bases. The edge of the blade is the only part that needs to be thin.

As for "kaijufying" the rest of him, consider these things:

1. When people picture whales, they don't picture super agile, fast, maneuverable animals. They picture gigantic levithans that elegantly glide through the sea. The most effective whale kaiju would play up the whole size and power of the animal more than almost any other attribute because that is the most iconic and unique thing about whales.
2. Whales don't move in a side to side motion like fish and aquatic reptiles. Instead they move in an up and down motion, with their fins doing most of the work when they need to turn. As such a whale with a large, thick body and huge flippers would actually be MORE maneuverable than a really thin whale with tiny flippers.
3. When designing a monster, it's best to go all the way. Never top kaijufication with the head.

More designing to come, then~

Truly there are a few ways to go with that.. I suppose extra armor wouldn't be too much more to do. Be nice to see a whole Nautilus of sorts like from the old 20,000 leagues under the sea(if you saw that old ass movie).

This, right here, is a vast improvement Aks. Bubba is looking all kinds of badass right here. Really love the rhino-esk horn and how the front of his armored head looks like an axe.

He looks pretty damn awesome form where I'm sitting. Sperm Whales are interesting critters anyway, so taking one to Kaijufy was a good choice.

Very much like the keratin armored head, while most of the rest of him is relatively un-armored. So it's more of a weapon as well as defense, and makes the head stand out.

well he is the "Ax of The Ocean". but I might expand his head a bit like in Deadepoolrus's picture of him.

A VAST improvement, my friend.

I wouldn't call simply adding in limbs "cheating", just uncreative if it's done poorly. And did I now?

Overall, the concept has loads of potential, but it still needs some work in certain aspects. BTW, I think you mean "keratin"..."carotene" is actually a pigment that gives carrots their orange color. That, and if the armor idea was inspired by those freaky growths found on humpback whales...well, those are actually hair follicles. Or something.

That armored head is just...just wonderful looking. The only suggestion I'll make is to give his lower jaw some armor as well; by the looks of it, the upper jaw's armor "teeth" would likely tear the lower jaw to ribbons if he ever tried closing his mouth. Perhaps you could move his nostril (sperm whales have only one) opening to the tip of that horn, it would give him quite the distinctive spray whenever he surfaces for a breath.

Now, while his head is near perfection, the rest of Bubba looks a bit...slapped together. There's just not much to it, honestly. Now, considering the stark contrast between Bubba's armored head and his relatively unarmored body, Dunkleosteus is what came first to my mind, and taking inspiration from it might be worth trying out. Also, those jellyfish are latched in a very, very bad place for a commensal species to be: since the pectoral fins wouldn't be actively used for swimming, maybe they'd be a better place for the jellies to "hang out". Oh, and move that dorsal fin back a bit, Bubba ain't a fish you know. LOL

As for using echolocation (not ultrasound ), Bubba's skull armor might present a bit of a problem: if it's too thick for him to hear/feel soundwaves through, echolocation would be totally useless to him.

I do have one other idea that kinda harks back to that "dino-whale" idea you had, but I'll wait and let you contemplate what I've already provided here first.

Ahh I see.

BUT most of your concerns are already delt with! MUWAHAHA!

..really, they are.
He does have Nostrils near the horn. I don't know if you can see them or not.
Bottom jaw IS armored, actually. I guess I didn't detail it enough.
Those lines on the armor are suppose to be openings to allow the sound to escape. I was sure I made those of all things very easy to tell.

...the rest I admit too. But I figured if I gave him too much armor, he me not be able to move at all.
And why are Jellyfish bad? I figured that was great to have them trailing along behind him.

Gilarah93 In reply to AkityMH [2012-01-14 06:43:57 +0000 UTC]

Yesh.

Are they now? We'll see. LOL

-At the base, yeah I can see them; what I actually meant was moving the nostril up to the horn's pointed tip.
-I see armor only on the jaw's tip, and there's no "teeth" in that spot of the upper jaw's armor anyways, so the lower jaw's armored tip does nothing protection-wise.

Dunkleosteus seemed to have managed just fine with all of its outlandish skull armor, no reason to think Bubba here couldn't as well. It's not the jellyfish, it's their positioning...look at it this way: what do you think is safer, riding inside a moving car or hanging off that moving car's back bumper? Same concept applies here with the jellies.

Send me a Note if you're interested in the idea, no need for me to say it here and spoil it for everybody else. I think it might be to your liking

Bubba was a good whale Kaiju before, and he's an even better one now. The Jellyfish are a nice idea, as are the hermit-crab things.
Also, I like how his head would make a perfect ice-breaker.
...And now he's got me wanting to work on making my whales a bit more distinctive. |D
