and now Ocean Soul

"One more night
To bear this nightmare
What more do I have to say

Crying for me was never worth a tear
My lonely soul is only filled with fear

Long hours of loneliness
Between me and the sea

Losing emotion
Finding devotion
Should I dress in white and search the sea
As I always wished to be - one with the waves
Ocean Soul

Walking the tideline
I hear your name
Is angels wispering
Something so beautiful it hurts

I only wished to become something beautiful
Through my music, through my silent devotion"

~Ocean Soul by Nightwish

Very nice. Stylish, dark, and a wonderful use of stock material.

But of course, room for improvement is available:

We first off start with the clouds. To me, they kinda look out of proportion, as in they look stretched / distorted which gives an uneasy feel when looking at it. May need some cutting, brushing, and otherwise to fix the issue.

The other thing is lighting. This is key and I'm very picky on it. The overall lighting direction is ok, I can forgive that, but what bothers me is the contrast ratio between the clouds and the sea. The sea is basically too bright and doesn't do what seas actually do when they go to the horizon. The thing is, when you view the ocean down to its horizon, you'll see that it doesn't simply go plop, but fade. Now it's not always the case, but in this picture, I expect it to fade gently to black or gray or whatever color suggests the depth. I would suggest using a gradient overlay to slowly draw our attention to the sky beyond just on the sea, and while leaving some detail behind, it should be ok.

The lighting on the female figure is also overly dim and has a funny black fuzz around it. This can be fixed by cleaning up/masking layers. While being the subject of the piece, my eye is easily drawn to the details of the ripples of the sea and so on. Again, lighting here is an issue. We have the dimmed light coming from the left side, and the light indeed follows, but fails when we get to the cloth she's sitting on. The cloth seems to catch a different light source, where we don't see any of it. Be warned of those next time.

Conclusions:
Be keen with lighting. It's one of the most important things that make your work look at its best. But we must be careful. It's also the biggest that makes a piece of art sink. About 90% of the works I critique have issues with lighting. We see things that defy logic and the flow of the work when lighting goes bad. However, I must say that this is well done. Please continue. Have fun.

yah I see what you mean about the clouds, I had a tough time trying to make them fit with the ocean only because they were different quality pictures. I still couldn't manage to get rid of the speckling on the clouds

Yah the horizon line I must have forgotten entirely about or something. I was actually going to add a sort of mist maybe or something to kind of mask that line so it didn't look like it was clouds then ocean instantly without some sort of medium.

I agree 100% with the lighting. I tried all I know to keep things similarly lighted, but I think its one of the hardest things to do, expecially with random stocks. I have not however use a mask layer to fix lighting issues, which I'll have to try with my next piece!

Ty so much for the info it might take a couple more deviations to get all of that down, but I will try!

"... speckling on the clouds "

The stock image size is: 6144 x 4096 pixels large. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "speckling" but I'm going to assume that it has something to do with the version you downloaded. If its the small one, you can expect distortion and artifacts when you stretch it out.

Otherwise "speckling" can refer to the amount of noise in the photograph. You can clean pictures up by using the median filter from the filters tab.

"add a sort of mist maybe or something to kind of mask"

The fastest and the dirtiest way to add depth is to use a horizontal gradient. Seriously, it's better than brushing it in.

"I have not however use a mask layer to fix lighting issues"

Also try dodging and burning. There are destructive / nondestructive methods of doing it so you might want to check out both. There should be ... a tutorial lying around somewhere.

High five.

ahh ok! yah the speckling I was talking about was just me being a perfectionist lol, I was most likely just seeing things

I'll have to try that gradient tool out!

I have recently discovered how awesome the dodge tool is, In this graphic and my newest ones I've tried to use it and I think it was quite successful. My newest Ghost Love Score 2 I not only used the dodge tool, but also the burn tool. I think it worked out well, but if you see anything don't be afraid to tell me!

Thank You again for all the help and the critique, its an honor!!
