Description When: a couple summers ago
Where: near my aunt's ranch in north OR

What:  I love working on my aunt's ranch.  She raises beef cattle for profit (mainly Longhorn and Watutsi), has a permanent herd of 6-8 horses (I've lost count, what with old horses dying and rescues being made residents) and also....

Is a rescue ranch!  She is a member of a group that works with the local ASPCA.  The ASPCA will give this group all horses/livestock that are rescued, as well as funds to heal/house them.  The group will have its member farms/ranches house and care for the animals while paying for treatment and living expenses.

Sometimes, my aunt hangs onto the horses she rescues.  She's got a colt named Oliver who came to her while still inside his mom.  My uncle was adamant they keep the little snot.  My sister's favorite horse is a washed-up barrel racer named Duke. My previous mount (RIP Lacey) was a failed broodmare that my aunt rescued from a glue factory (no joke).  Honestly, I think every horse except her draft is a rescue in some sense.

Anyways, the handsome boy above is Cochise, one such rescue.  Cheesy (as we call him) is at least mostly mustang, with perhaps a bit of AQH mixed in.  He was born on the range, caught wild, and trained through a mustang program.  My aunt noticed he was going up for adoption and pounced on her opportunity to have a 'stang.  He's kind of a lazy boy and I prefer Zebulon (the draft) over him, but he and my brother get along famously!

This is a shot I took of him after a trail ride, looking off while I dismounted.
