Hastings Castle in East Sussex was one of three built by William of Normandy in 1066 after he landed his invading army and before he secured his conquest of England following victory at the Battle of Hastings later that year. Fortifications were improved in the two centuries after but by the end of the 14th century it was largely in ruins as a result of batterings by violent storms, an attack by the French and coastal erosion. After Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries it was largely neglected and overgrown and was further damaged by German bombing raids during World War II.
