Description

Swamp King Hydra

When the King of the Swamps greets you, bow your head, hold still, and pray it just ate.

Scientific Name: Direanium palus

Length: 85 ft (25.908 meters)

Weight: 60 tones ( 54 metric tons)

Habitat: Swamps, bogs, and estuaries.

Temperament: Lax, yet intelligent hunters who care little for their claimed territories, until a prey item wanders in.

Known as the Swamp King Hydra, Direaniums are a unique case among the equally unique class of Hydra. Unlike a fair amount of their kin, Direanium are ambush hunters, as their heavy bodies and lack of back limbs prevent them from giving chase like many of their relatives. Luckily, the bogs they thrive in are rife with proper hiding spaces, and their camouflaged scutes paired with their low profile allows them to be excellent semi-aquatic hunters.

Instead of teeth, the dual heads of Direaniums have the upper and lower portions of the armored skull form a sort of sheer, which can slice captured prey in half with ease. These reinforced heads also harbor the typical venom sacks that all Hydras have, although the method of release is quite peculiar. Instead of delivering the venom through a bite or projectile, Direanium can spew toxin in the form of a debilitating mist, causing most any animal to inhale the fumes to enter near immediate shock. However, when the Kings of the Swamp are threatened by other large predators, they use neither their tough skulls nor poisonous breath to deter them. Instead, they simply rear up, towering over the encroaching animal and striding towards them. Such behavior is usually too much, and the aggressor will flee in terror. If the predator does not back down, then, and only then, will the massive Direanium use its shearing jaws to defend itself. Usually to deadly effect.
