I usually don't critique the work you do, but I think I'll give a crack at it.

I really love the colouring that you did, it looks like she's got cracks of lava in her outfit, and the smoke is exceptional. The cinders coming off her was a very nice touch too.

I'm not sure I'm too fond of the light burst in the background since it tends to draw the eye away from your character. On the actual character the hair seems a bit too straight at the end, unless a razor cut was what you were looking for? Also the chest seems a bit...awkward. I'm not sure if it's because it's too circular or if I have just because accustom to seeing big-breasted women or flat chested women on art now a days. The elbow on the right [to the viewer] also seems a bit odd. It almost looks as if a piece of it is broken off.

I hope this helps

well, i'm aware of most of the mistakes, it was just a quick 90 minutes thing, not something i paid too much attention to.
anyway, thanks for trying to help pointing out some of my mistakes, i really appreciate it!
(much more helpful than all those one-worded comments)

It was no problem :3 it's very frustrating to just feel like your getting feedback from a wall sometimes xD I try and occasionally critique

yeah i know that feeling...however i generally don't criticize other peoples work, because most of them react...not well, even though i'm trying to be as polite and constructive as possible...guess many other people feel the same way and don't want to upset the artists they admire

I've run into the not taking the criticism well quite a few times. A ton of excuses, I've heard most of them. And frankly, if the artists I admire can't handle some critique I really lose respect xD I find starting off with the good helps...sometimes it's hard to find the good xD

i was like this too (10 years ago when i was 16, lol) and i was wondering why my art didn't improve...and i don't know, at some point it just struck me like a lightning and after that i was never again satisfied with any of my works, which helped me improve quite alot
today i'm really happy if people help me find mistakes in my pictures but it doesn't happen really often

Well, the only time I have a rough time taking critique is if you draw something that is referenced, say an OC? And then you're told that your missing something or something is wrong, when it's not even on the reference.Just an annoyance But I've always taken critique relatively...well? Not as much if it's free and it's a gift xD but most times when it's posted on dA

no, the worst kind of critiques are the stupid ones...like you colored someone elses lines and wrote
in your comment that you just colored someone elses lineart and the first thing people are telling you is that something's wrong with the lines
or if you wrote in the comment that you are aware of a certain mistake and they still point it out...this is just annoying as hell, haha!

Unloved-Sage In reply to alecyl [2012-05-06 23:07:07 +0000 UTC]

I don't usually use someone else's lineart xD Mostly because I'm sooo new to digital, that I want to be able to figure out how to do it myself before I use other people's. It's all very new and scary. But yes, sometimes I wonder if people overdose on stupid pills when writing comments.

alecyl In reply to Unloved-Sage [2012-05-06 23:40:52 +0000 UTC]

it's not only the lineart thing, it's an overall observation i made and it's just terrible.
people tend to ignore the comment completely and then ask questions or rant about a thing that is already explained in the comment...this behavior just sucks :/

Usually if someone says look at the artist's comments there's usually a reason I find dA has become something of an art facebook [sadly] where it's just a feel good place. I feel bad for some of us who are trying to get better. *sigh* Oh well, at least most of the tutorials are still here!

alecyl In reply to Unloved-Sage [2012-05-30 00:36:42 +0000 UTC]

well, i guess if you want to get better, you have to take the initiative in your own hands and directly ask people to give you their opinion!
...at least they do not sell your personal information to ad-people like facebook does

True enough! Not that dA is too far from that.

yeah, she's really hot, in the most literal sense
it's fun to redesign my old stuff, because what i did back in the day looked a bit...well... naive you could say, but taking the core elements of the design and build a new one around them with all the stuff i know now is really cool!

LulzyRobot In reply to alecyl [2012-04-26 01:06:51 +0000 UTC]

I agree! I do that as well every so often ^^

alecyl In reply to LulzyRobot [2012-04-26 01:12:03 +0000 UTC]

y'know, the reason why most of my characters change their outfits so often is, that i constantly get new ideas for their design and want to try them out as soon as i can
i really don't like the idea of defining a character with their outfit, because it's kinda lame and boring having to stick to the same design for a long time!
(i mean people have wardrobes in real life too, so why not give your characters some new clothes every now and then )

LulzyRobot In reply to alecyl [2012-04-26 01:13:33 +0000 UTC]

True say true say, I have a lot of sketches of some of my characters in different outfits. Some decent, some atrocious and make me want to erase everything o-o

alecyl In reply to LulzyRobot [2012-04-26 01:15:27 +0000 UTC]

ha, yeah i know that!
when i go through my old sketch folders, some of the pics make me so ashamed (because i sucked so much at drawing) that i want to crawl in a dark hole and die

oh yeah, it really hurts sometimes! the most common things i think when reviewing my old stuff are "gee, what the fuck were you thinking?!" and "oh god, is so wrong, how on earth could i not see that?!"
