Fossils of petrified trunks of tree species of the coniferous family: Estimated age: 65,000,000 years

65,000,000 years ago, in this area (now more than 150km away from the Argentine Sea), the Atlantic Ocean entered, forming a large coastal plain surrounded by swamps where a large number of logs were carried by the rivers. The trunks of trees sunk in the swamps were preserved and began a process of petrifaction.

The process of petrification is produced by the replacement of plant tissues by mineral salts of the substrate (in this case by marine sediment and not by volcanic ash).

Then this area was buried by volcanic ash during the formation of the Andes mountain range for millions of years until by wind erosion these fossils come to light. In the mountain of the photograph you can see petrified trunks exposed and semi exposed by this erosion of the Patagonian winds.
