Description
From the Great Library of the Clayr, a selection of passages from Lirael’s journey.
OKAY so, I had a High Medieval Art History class this term and instead of an essay we were allowed to authentically recreate an art form from our lectures, so I chose to illuminate a manuscript using passages and content from Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom series, include Nick/Orannis’s song, the Five Charters, the warning rhyme of the dead and water and the titles of the Nercomancer’s bells. I completed it yesterday, using ink, tempera, and a gold foiling pen.
The motifs are all in reference to the Burney 275, a manuscript from 1310 by a Parisian illuminator, but I incorporated Abhorsen, Clayr and Charter based symbols. See what you can spot! I am really proud of this thing, might take better photos of it when I get it back from being marked.

Why thank you!
I used a craft store gold leafing pen, which is really just liquefied metallic ish gold paint in a push pen, then I scored it to look like actual gold leaf pieces.

Currently there is not but I may look into doing a proper scan of it soon! I have since obtained a good quality flatbed scanner (those images up there are bad photos) and still have the original in my room. It all depends on interest really.

Okay, so I saw this on tumblr, but I HAD to come comment on it here because it's just so beautiful. Illuminating manuscripts is hard work. From your typesetting to your gold foil to all of the bells to djlas;jfkla;gsl;hgsjlj I just have to say it's lovely and you deserved more than a B.

Ahah thank you! I worked hard on it, but honestly that was mostly because of my love for the series which was my downfall. I was more accurate to the book than the historical resources and got an average mark. It doesn't get me down though because now I have this thing in my room~

This is beautiful! I've always wanted to try something like this (if I ever had the patience, haha) but I'd never be able to decide on which series to reference. Old Kingdom is perfect <3 Hope you got a good mark!

I got a B, but I'm still really happy with it. Yeah the Old Kingdom books had loads to pull from.

Impressive... most impressive. Great work, and it's great that your teacher let you draw something like this; he unwittingly played right into your talented hands.

It was amazingly fun to work with since I kept finding places to stick easter eggs, like the crow and the Clayr stars~!
