Keep forgetting how good this is, one of my favourite photographs for sure.

I'd love to see it in print, do you do them yourself or at a lab?

At a lab, it's more cost effective for the most part.

nice technique. And i thought unsharp masking on a luminosity layer was bad ass!

Excellent shot - care to share what sharpening method you're using?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alex37 In reply to Annaphotix [2008-10-11 17:03:27 +0000 UTC]

I wish I could find the tutorial I read, but a description of the method is at the bottom/top of the page depending on your preferences (the oldest comments)

Annaphotix In reply to Alex37 [2008-10-12 19:12:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I've just seen it now. It involves downsizing the image, which is the last thing I want to do unfortunately. Yeah, in downsizing and working in selections/layers with sharpening, a photo can look very punchy indeed.. Thanks for sharing anyway

Alex37 In reply to Annaphotix [2008-10-12 20:24:27 +0000 UTC]

why is that the last thing you want to do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Annaphotix In reply to Alex37 [2008-10-13 10:51:30 +0000 UTC]

The last thing I want to do is downsize my image. We make prints here, and so I want the file-size to be kept at its maximum at 300 ppi for that purpose.

Alex37 In reply to Annaphotix [2008-10-13 11:11:56 +0000 UTC]

ha! Well obviously I print all my work too, up to 30 inche in some case. you do of course only downsize the file once you have coimpleted the editing and created a copy. Downsizing the original would be lunacy!

By the way, as I am sure you know ppi isnt a measure of image size. I could have my web images at 300 ppi!

OK, it was the way it was written then, that made me think you downsized before doing the sharpening. I always keep my originals in RAW format too, and of course, the ones from which prints would be made as TIFF's at full size but edited where necessary.

Alex37 In reply to Annaphotix [2008-10-13 11:37:08 +0000 UTC]

well I do downsize then sharpen....

basically once I have completed the editing of the master file I save it then duplicate it. I then resize and sharpen for web. Its what all of the pros and most amatuers on thi site do.

I do the same thing, except I keep the original RAW in its primal state so its always there to start from scratch with again if ever I want to.

Alex37 In reply to Annaphotix [2008-10-13 17:27:13 +0000 UTC]

well yeah and I do that too. But in any case, if you do all that then what did you have disagreement with?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Annaphotix In reply to Alex37 [2008-10-13 17:34:35 +0000 UTC]

Now its got too complicated! Perhaps there never was a disagreement. Please excuse me.

one of your best images.
i think that sharpening method was fist published at naturephotographers.net by Marc Adamus [link]
But i dont think he discovered it......
In cases where there are rocks works very well.
Great photo Alex, timing is perfect for the water.
Cheers

Yeah that method also doesnt work as well, or at least not all of the time because it isnt as specific. The 1.6666x bit is very important, I have tried it with 1.5 times for example and it isnt nearly as good. Annoyingly I read the tutorial and then I cant find it again
