Thank you and all you have to do is practice and there is nothing you cannot achieve.

The eyes are the one thing I slave over in my portraits. Tome they can make or break a piece of art

You are right about that, if the eyes aren't right
nothing else works, no matter how well it
has been done

Glad you like it. I really wanted to focus in as a portrait with this piece and try for as much realism as I could. Thank you

I confess, I like this one much better than the brightly colored ones you've done recently. Perhaps they are just a bit too strong for my taste, although they are as always, beautifully executed. But this one, with the way you've drawn the depth of field, draws you right into the center--with those eyes of course, but also because you've got the straight line of the arrow leading in. I have to say though, that armor on her left is highly distracting. In the overall perspective I don't think that it should be quite so clearly delineated and with the light on it, it competes with the eyes. I realize that "chesty" may be appealing but the way those buckles go up the middle right under the "overflow", all I can think of is that must really be uncomfortable and hamper her movement, which somehow is reinforced by the last of any left arm in the composition. I realize that her pose is turned and angled, but her torso is too far forward and the neckline jutting out too far to her left. The body just doesn't line up to connect to the face and hoof right. I love the detailing on the hood and the way the point come up from her left shoulder. But that left large appendage is out of whack and ruins the center line of the focus, instead of enhancing it. Frankly, I'd suggest letting folds of a cape come down from the left shoulder and get rid of the bulge with the bright highlights completely--or something like that . . . Hope you don't mind the little critique, but that's the way I see it.

I think it's better like this, at least it doesn't drag my eye from her eyes so much now. Do flip it and see what you see--speaking as a gal though, there's just something not quite right about that anatomy. But never mind, it's all fantasy, right? thanks for taking the critique so well. But then I, too, really appreciate when someone makes a comment that I can actually either learn from or see something a different way. Keep up the great work!

I loved playing with the depth of field and the lighting. I was considering it as a colour piece first but my mind works better in black & white for some reason. Glad you like it.

I'm probably an odd one, but I have always enjoyed black and white artwork more than colorful art. However, I always wonder if white and black stand a chance to win these contests, since they are not as popular in general. In any case, studying your work is a great lesson in order to understand perspective and subject focus better.

I have always loved black & white for its striking quality and I would have to agree with the lack of it in competitions. Thank you for your comment and I am always happy to offer my advice to anyone who asks.
