This heretical study of Necron technology should be widely approved.

40K makes just about any other sci fi setting look boring by comparison; which is appropriate since they stole ideas from just about every other setting and then cranked the awesome up to 11.Β

Actually everyone else stole from them. Most modern sci-fi fantasy has a few elements from this. Case in point, the chainsaw gun from gears of war. The chainsword is ten times more badass tho.

Not really, they stole from Dune, Star Wars, Star Trek, the Foundation Series, Starship Troopers, (and more); all of which predate 40K - which is fine, most fans acknowledge that - and, sure, since then more recent series have stolen from them ... it's the circle of life in the genre I suppose. Β That doesn't mean 40K isn't cool, super cool, even; like I said, they may have stolen from those other sources, but they cranked up the awesome when they did so and the end result was something altogether amazing.Β

Originality isn't all it takes to make for quality. 40k wasn't that original, but it drew masterfully upon a plethora of influences from inventive sci-fi authors that had gone before. As you said, it took all the best from science fiction all over the place and epitomized it. Consequently, of course, Warhammer 40'000 has been the obvious go-to reference point for any subsequent studios and authors trying to make a futuristic world of their own.
This is as it should be. Creativity breeds creativity. The cycle of inspiration runs unbroken from prehistory and must be allowed to run free into the future.
