Until I'm told otherwise by Naughty Dog, I think the plot will be as such:
Ellie and Joel have rebuilt their relationship over the years and are as close as any parent and child can be. One day, a group of Fireflies find Elllie's location and try to take her by force. During the ensuing fight, Joel saves Ellie, but is killed. This causes something to break inside Ellie and she embarks on a crusade of vengeance against the Fireflies. She is plagued by her conscience, which manifests itself as a hallucination of Joel that tries to dissuade her from this campaign, but she continues regardless.
