Commissioned by Legion of Angels project.Creation time: from concept acrylic sketch on paper to the final version- 11 months!
What it is: Acrylic + photography +Photoshop CS tablet brushing
Hardware used: Wacom Intuos 6x8 tablet
Real size: 28x64 inches or 8'659 by 20'000 pixels at 300 DPI

Yes, the action takes place in the coliseum and I watched the Gladiator movie to get inspiration.

Your vision of the angel wings is amazing. I love the vibrancy of the colouration - so often the angels attributed with death are subdued, monochrome, the darkest end of the spectrum - but your use of blues and purples, whilst bright and almost vivacious, still has this beautifully subtle coldness to it. The detailing with the crowd and carvings is absolutely exquisite - totally in awe for that.
And that sky....I'm a sucker for a beautiful sky and this one is one of the best I've ever seen, even in reality. Amazing work.

obviously freaking awesome, it would be better if the gladiator that is alive was in a better pose (something that looks not so quiet) and not so fatty, lol. And the scythe is kind of small, hehe

I love the work and the colors and story, but i think you might have your angesl mixed up. For if i remember correctly Gabrial used a mace where Azrael used the scyth.

just a small tip though, the gladiator's stance seems a little off. It may be my inexperience, but i feel it would be better if you manipulated the gladiator such that his side was facing his opponent, this way, he could be giving a killing reverse thrustwith the appropriate amount of force your artwork seems to convey. I just feel that looking at the work now, the open-legged stance is used mostly when circling an opponent or to redircet blows, because mainly it is a bad position to exert any appreciable forward thrust, thats why when being stabbed the person stabbing puts a leg behind him to exert the forward-propelling force. From your picture, the amount of force the gladiator can give without tipping backwards doesn't seem to in sync with the amount of force he IS giving out.
A minor mechanical error, or maybe its just the angle. Either way, the main theme of your artwork is amazing. and i'd love to see more.

Personally I have always liked Azriel for the Angel of Death over Gabriel, but reguardless, the image is stunning and powerful. Possible the most beautiful interprataion I have seen yet of an anthropomorphic personification of Death.
