Description Pic I finished up a couple days ago featuring Naga!Picard, an AU version of Picard because we can't be satisfied with just one!
Picard makes best snek.

A doodle that wasn't really supposed to go anywhere but then it did. It took several days between commission, trade, and comic work. Was nice to just mess around with stuff again. Especially with a background added, even though it's really simple and messy, and really more of a color experiment than anything. Then again, pretty much all of this was an experiment, really. The shading on his scales was based off a couple images I came across with super lovely shading that I decided to try out. Water droplets all over were just plain murder. Such murder. The dappling effect I tried two or three different versions of. One version worked a bit more accurately, but I disliked how it looked aesthetically so I went with this. Still need to practice that some more.

This is a slightly edited version of the picture compared to the one I posted on FA and Tumblr. I wanted to look it over for a couple days before submitting it here since I wanted to adjust things after the fact. They're so minor they are hardly worth mentioning but ssssh

On top of it all, it's also long haired!Picard. I need to do that more. I really should add that version to his ref sometime...

What is he even doing in that water? Taking a snek bath? Waiting for a meal to crawl by? Getting clean for a certain someone? Nobody knows~

Did you base the snake body off any snake in particular or just went with greens to match his hair?

He was based off a mix between a Coral and King snake: c2.staticflickr.com/6/5304/559… Heavily on the King snake side with the thick, "wobbly" stripes, but with the dark/light stripes inverted like a Coral.
Then colors were just his greens because we gotta stay consistent right? =D

NAGA PICARD IS HEEEERE. Glad you posted this here because the AU with naga!Picard and centaur!Audi is looking really cute-- it fits! Is this the universe you were talking about doing a comic for?

Anyways, lovin' this picture here, oh Picard you sass factory! The expression and facial construction are spot-on and I like the combination of clean lineart and smudged background. It's got nice depth that's brought out even more by those little droplets! My only critique would be to have made the light dapples bolder, by increasing the crispness of them or toying with saturation. Sometimes it's hard to make "subtle light" sharp, but with light dapples it helps a lot. I hope to learn this myself, urg... Overall it's such an adorably awesome picture, and how great to see naga!Picard! The snake thing, it really suits him. Great job, Filly!

(Although I can't help but wonder how much time he spends waxing his snake body. And could you imagine his attitude while he' molting? Watch out world!)

Aha I kept this message in here because I WANTED to edit the picture up and see if it improved any. I finally got around to trying and unfortunately I couldn't quite get it right! It kept looking like he had a case of yellow chicken pox! Not sure why I couldn't get it right but it definitely wasn't liking me! I definitely would like to try a different method another time though. Thanks for the tip even so! I'll get it eventually

Anyway TO THE ACTUAL COMMENT AT LAST!

I looooove Naga!Picard to bits <3 I want to draw him more if I can. It's just a shame all my ideas lately for Picard are him with LEGS! AGH!
Remind me whenever I finish the script for that comic to send it by you for a good crit!

Sass Factory. I love that oh my gosh <3 <3
But thank you so kindly! I'm glad you like it! It's definitely one of my favorite pieces of this year with him!

(I kept thinking about this since you mentioned it AND YOU TOTALLY INSPIRED AN IDEA for his world! I kept laughing at the idea of him shedding his skin and how DANG BIG that skin casing would be. Imagine... that he SELLS his skins for folks' religious rituals or decorations! After all, that's how some people use skins in our world aha! Who knows what other uses it can have for Mythos. Maybe even medicines or a nice snack somehow! Picard's gotta make some money somehow in this AU ;3 )

Aaahh I forgot that you'd yet to reply to this! :'D You're super welcome! Light dapples are really, really hard to get down and I think it's a matter of crispness or lighting that's juuuust right. It's all about practice... or finding that "aha" method, at least. If you figure something out, pass it my way!

Oh my goodness, I would love to read the first draft! As a serious fan of Picard and gang, that would mean a lot to me. And I'm honored to hear that wandering rambles inspired something, hehe THAT'S MAH JOB. But I can definitely see Picard doing that, putting his shed skin up for sale or even for auction-- going once, going twice, nagas are rare after all! I can also see it getting him into a lot of trouble with less peaceful peoples. Imagine him to advertise to a party of travelers, only to learn they're POACHERS. Good thing Audi's never too far away...

It's so true! I think it's a bit difficult because most often I see people try it and they either use a big splatter-like brush for the light OR they do it backwards of this: they add the shadow through the brush rather than adding the light as I tried to do. Ahh well! I'll have to force new scenarios just to practice this! In fact, there's an oooold collab from Pyro and I sitting around that would be perfect...

Totally! Plus you'd be able to kick out a lot of kinks. I always like letting a third party read stuff and ask questions. Usually when I get people asking me the tough questions I end up developing the worlds two-fold!
Hehe, I think I'm even going to start the comic off with little Harlin walking through the forest towards Picard's house and show big looooong skins just hanging on clothes lines all menacingly

Audrey's always there to kick in some faces! Or... flirt them away

That's actually a good point! I recently tried the "cutaway shading" technique (on this piece ) and found it really hard to control, but I can see it being perfect for forest lighting. Note to self!

Having beta readers/developers is really fun, and I can't wait to see the fantasy!AU, along with all the other stuff you've been working on. It's always exciting, when projects are in the development phase. Aaaiii~

I really like this! And yeah I would think all those droplets would be a pain in the neck to do. haha. The colors of his snakeyness is awesome, and I really love the shading.

Aww thanks! Yeees those droplets were crazy to do. Which is sad cause there aren't that many of them. I think it just felt like a lot because I was doing them when I was half asleep! xD
Gotta have him covered in green <3 Him and his green obsession.

Green is an awesome color, it's easily my 2nd favorite. And I have yet to master how to make water look like- Well, water.

AlfaFilly In reply to ArtsyGoatAlan [2015-08-09 23:41:37 +0000 UTC]

A good trick to doing water is to simply flip whatever it is above the water (not LITERALLY flip it but like, softly paint in what the reflection would be like) and just add some swishy pretty water squiggles over it. That's literally all I did for this!

Ooooh! I'll keep that in mind the next time I decide to draw water : D
