For my next world building project I'm working on a completely new fantasy world. Geographically this world is inspired partly by the planet Mars and I borrow a lot from ( [link] ) for ideas and the general layout. This map was made in GIMP 2.8 and with help from the Cartographersguild for tutorials that made this happen.

The lore for such a world is that it was once a dying planet, akin to Athas of Dark Sun. At some point Ancient Arch-Magi managed to save what life still prevailed in the world in Demi-Planes that acted as Arks to save lave. Then at least according to the Ancient True Elves beings called the Terra Tektona, (Some Elves claim their was only one, others claim their were several, some account that they were simply incredibly powerful Wizards of Epic level Spellcasting, Still others claimed it was the reawakening of the Gods) Reshaped and re-birthed the world. However every birth is painful, the world was battered by its cracked moon, The oceans rose once more flooding lost cities, and the volcanoes reignited spewing ash into the sky. In time the Ark's were reopened and the world's old life reintroduced. However the Demi-Planes acted as a time warp or form of time travel. With Time passing faster outside then in. Plants, Animals ect were released in what seemed like days, but each day was hundreds of thousands of years in the Material Plane. When Sapient Life returned the world was a verdant wilderness, and in some cases already starting to develop its own new sapient races once more.

My Girlfriend as well as several others have contributed a lot of ideas for this world.
