Description

Three months ago Sandra was getting something off the top shelf in the closet. When she stepped down from the chair, she broke her foot and then fell and broke her wrist. Her boyfriend took her to the ER where she was fitted with casts for her lower leg and wrist. She needed two crutches to keep weight off her foot for a few weeks. They attached a forearm bar to one of the crutches so she could use it with her right arm and then released her with a prescription for pain medication.

She was instructed to rest in bed for at least two days to let her casts dry completely. She was off work for a few days but finally she got back to the office and thought she was doing ok. Her foot was almost well and she didn't need the crutches but then, ten days ago, she slipped in the kitchen and hit her face on a chair which broke her nose. While trying to protect herself in this fall she also broke a finger on her already-injured right hand. Her nose hurt so bad she couldn’t sleep much for several days but she kept struggling to go to work because she had heard a rumor that the company was in financial trouble and she didn’t want to be absent at this critical time.

Just when she thought things were getting back to normal, she was called into her boss’ office and told, as gently as possible, she was being laid off. Since she had been at this job for less than two years, she only got a small severance package and in a month she won’t have medical insurance. If she needs follow up treatment for her injuries, she will have a severe financial problem.

Her boss tried to console her but there is really nothing he could do. He knows he too will be on the street pretty soon when the company closes for good.

One of Sandra’s co-workers offered to take her home but she was shy because it’s a thirty minute drive. She called her boy friend and then asked her friend to carry her personal things for her out to the street, where she is now quietly crying and waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up.

She is so, so depressed.
