PRINT AVAILABLE Illustration I spent quite a bit of time on the past few days, inspired by (a very brief but powerful scene from) Spirited Away. Also fulfills an old kiriban request from WingsofSmoke. I posted a progress shot of this on my sketchblog last week - reference from here ; I also looked at many underwater and ocean photos for inspiration, particularly the underwater photography of SachaKalis .Reblog on Tumblr!

This is beautiful! But I was under the impression that you're not allowed to sell prints of fan art? It's not your intellectual property, is it?

Wouldn't that hold true for images drawn from photographs that you haven't taken yourself? No one would be able to sell a portrait image ever again. I think as long as it's not a direct image that hasn't been drawn by an artist who is trying to sell it, it's fine. I think

No that's different. This shot is copied as is from a screenshot from the movie. Even if it the scene wasn't copied, if I drew a picture of this character it would be fan art. Art based on the creation of someone else would be considered fan art, and selling fan art is against dA rules, as far as I'm told.
Using photographs for reference is different because the photographer only owns the picture he took, not the place or person he took a photo of. you're not drawing the photograph, you're drawing the person in the photograph. A portrait is not fan art.
