No paint? I demand to know what you did do to the clay to make this thing look so uber-yummy!

There are 3 (well known ) secrets:
1. For the color - colored polymer clay - I rarely use the colors as they are - I mix different colors until I get the one I want. For the meat for example, I made myself a few shades of brown and then mixed them, but not enough to obtain another uniform color.

2. For the translucence - translucent polymer clay - and I am careful not to mix too much opaque clay with the translucent one or else the resulting clay will not be translucent anymore. Also FIMO is not very translucent when it's thicker. I've heard Sculpey is better at this. Never used it though.

3. For the texture - anything that can scratch the clay - here I think I used rumpled tin foil for both the bread and the meat and a toothpick.

And bonus secret : I brushed a bit of brown pencil crayon dust on the bread, to give it that well made look.

I did not invent all these. I learned them from tutorials.

Wow, I didn't expect such an elaborate answer, hehe. Thank you!
That kinda makes me want to try stuff like that as well... If I have some spare time and find the right things needed though.

No problem! All you really need, if you just wanna try it out, is FIMO (which is produced in Germany ) and tin foil. FIMO to make stuff and tin foil to protect your desk and the tray you'll cook it on. Tools can be improvised, as I did at the beginning too (I used a kitchen knife and a thick needle lol). Now I got myself some sculpting tools, but nothing fancy or expensive.

I just googled it and you're right I'm surprised it's already available for kids age 8, as of the ingredients...
I have clay somewhere, I think my Mum gave it to me. But I'm not sure it's the same kind of clay... I'll have to check that. If I find the clay, that is. I'm a chaotic person
Yeah, I would have improvised with the tools anyway I have stuff like knives, forks and spoons I used for an art project in school. Are those cultping tools anything special? After all the things you craft are pretty small.

Clay and polymer clay are 2 different things. From what I know, clay is named the one that doesn't need to be baked.

You can see some of my tools in this tutorial I made [link] . They are different shaped cutters, needles and brushes (very useful for creating food texture). I bought them from an art supply store (probably the cheapest ones ).

I need to find it xD But as far as I remember, you could both let it dry via air or baking.
That's a great tutorial! Also, I think I've seen tools like these in school. Sadly I don't have access to them anymore... I graduated a month ago and go to college now

Thank you! I'm not sure whether college is going to be that great... It'll start next week, but I already feel crammed up with information and everything's so complicated. Ah, sorry if I'm too whiney And spamming your deviation

Nah, everything seems complicated until you understand how it works. I tried college twice, but never took it serious, so never finished it, but I'm thinking I'd like to try again. College is a lot of fun too! I'm sure you'll do fine! And don't worry, I'm the queen of whining!

Yeah, but it's all that computer stuff which is confusing me And I'm going to study computational visualistics...
What courses did you take/ will you take?

One year I was student at the Economic Studies Academy in Bucharest. And after that I studied Geography-Meteorology at the Bucharest University. And now I'm thinking to finally study art. Though I'd really like to study sociology too! And linguistics! I'm doomed.

That thing you'll study what does it really mean? o_O

MafiaVamp In reply to ALINAFMdotRO [2012-04-12 22:29:25 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that are really wide-spread fields I'm sure, though, you'll succeed at arts evetually. You have that touch about you If you'd like to do sociology ad lingusistics, too... What about becoming a teacher? For example one of my friends studies Art and English as subjects to teach in school.

Uhm, well it's kinda like computer science with emphasis on art. How people see pictures, their visual impact, robotics, alaysis of data and stuff like that... What exactly it is I cannot tell yet, as university just starts next week

That thing you're gonna study sounds awesomely complicated! Very interesting, really! It's awesome what people can study in college nowadays. One of my best friends will go to UK to study video games!

When I was a kid I wanted to be a teacher. I tormented my little sisters every day! I used to make little notebooks for them and make them write stuff. I don't think I'd be a good teacher as most kids annoy me when I spend too much time with them. But you never know!
