Description This is fan art trying to depict the beginning battle of Echo Base on Hoth, in "Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back"

Dreamorchid78 is hosting here "80's Ultimate Contest", and this is my entry.
Here is a link to the Contest: dreamorchid78.deviantart.com/jā€¦

I tried to capture the feel of the 80's, and added a lot of noise for a film grain affect. I really wanted to get away from that obvious 3D look that I often have, and get that great movie feel to it. I had to do a lot of texture work on this with the Snowspeeders and the ATAT Imperial Walkers. I learned a lot of things making this piece.

I used Poser for model setup, Vue for rendering, and lots of Photoshop for the Matt painting and postwork. I put this in mixed media because there was a lot of painting over the 3D.

*Edit:
billythebrain had made some good suggestions, so I added some snow and some motion blur on a few of the speeders. Let me know what you think.

This was one of my favorite scenes from the entire star wars saga...when he vaults off the speeder and does an Olympic level dismout and flows right into combat it's priceless You've done an outstanding job of capturing the look and feel of the movie here. Love it.

I knew that... but what's the technique for making two suns?

I love the silhouette and the sense of speed. It's generally simple, but the extra detail on the bike pulls it together nicely.

It's great work and I like the angle. The silhouette is mysterious, but it seems 2D. Considering the character on the bike, it does make sense that you can get sucked in that black abyss, yet it doesn't quite fit the realism with the rest of the canvas, IMO. Personally, I think a very subtle outline of his body would give it some depth. Or maybe what's throwing me off is that its too black. But again, I can understand if the "black abyss" aspect was done intentionally.

Thank you. I was definitely going for mysterious animated, meets slight realism. And odd combo but I liked it

Awesome - the Star Wars fan in me grins broadly, while the Darth Maul fangirl squees in delight.

But that aside, you've done a wonderful job here - great POV, DOF, and the twin suns of Tatooine... I recognized the setting from the small preview image alone, so - well done!

Will there be more SW fanart in the future? I'd love that.

This was fun to do, so I definitely want to do some more Star Wars fan art in the near future. I've been in fan art mode lately

I always thought that Darth Maul got shafted when he... got shafted I guess.

He was a much more interesting character than Dooku.

He should have been the villain for all 3 preqs

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

alltheoriginalnames In reply to Longscope [2009-04-21 11:53:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh most definitely, but I think thats what made him even more liked. The fact that you really didn't see much of him, so everybody wanted more.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Longscope In reply to alltheoriginalnames [2009-04-21 12:14:52 +0000 UTC]

too true.

It's the same with Fett in the original (holy) trilogy. He was dark and mysterious, so everyone wanted more.

Even though they showed a bit too much Jango in Ep 1-3, he's still interesting.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

alltheoriginalnames In reply to Longscope [2009-04-21 13:07:13 +0000 UTC]

I was all about Boba Fett, thought he was the coolest man, and barely had any lines. Just the fact that he was quite, badass and everybody knew it really added to the character. And to have gotten killed off comically by a blind Solo was the kicker lol

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Longscope In reply to alltheoriginalnames [2009-04-21 19:03:50 +0000 UTC]

Although, I do like that fett survives the sarlac and escapes in the books.

Later on (spoilers) he becomes a responsible leader of Mandalore. He even has a family.

That I liked.

alltheoriginalnames In reply to Longscope [2009-04-21 19:13:10 +0000 UTC]

Ni kidding, never knew that. I never picked up the books, which is odd because I liked Star Wars and I like to read lol.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Longscope In reply to alltheoriginalnames [2009-04-21 21:10:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, do yourself a favor and pick them up. There's a whole timeline over at lucasbooks on what comes when. I highly recommend doing it chronologically, more interesting that way.

All in all, there's like 45-60 books. And in most cases, they're very good. Often better than ep 1-3
