Description Please fullview for detail!

This image is reflective of the way I've been feeling the past few days, and was inspired by a scene from Origin of Stitch.

I uploaded a sketch of this image earlier, and have been working on it from 12pm to 8:30pm doing digital lineart and finally colouring it and adding this background. It's a fairly simple background but I think it fits the mood of the image. The lineart took forever, as this is my very first attempt at traditional art, so I really haven't developed the skill to do it quickly.

I wanted to make this look as nice as possible but there are still a few flaws in it, but to get rid of them I'd have to rework all the lineart and I'd rather not do that. Still I don't think it turned out too bad, even though I definitely have room for improvement.

His feet aren't perfect, I tried 5 different ways of drawing them and just decided to settle on this. Also, I didn't forget the claws, but when I started to draw them on Stitch's left hand it didn't look right, so I decided to have his hands closed instead, what you see here is supposed to be his hands folded underneath his face.

So anyway, here it is, the coloured, digitally-reworked version of Sad Stitch, my very first attempt at traditional art, and my first attempt at digitally colouring traditional art. Let me know what you think. Try not to be too harsh, it is my first attempt!

Way to go! It's awesome. Amazing for a first.

About the legs, I think it might need to go so you can't see all of the back one. It would hide behind his ear or something. Just something if you're looking for improvement.

I know you spent alot of time on this one. I really think you should continue. There are artist here on DA that draw for years and draw alot worse then this. So for a first one this rocks. Keep up the good work B!

You're kidding me right, I mean I've never done this before and it's better than some who have years of practice? How does that happen? I don't have the talent that a lot of people have. It's still hard for me to believe this is really my image though, it feels like it should be someone else's, cos i cant believe i actually pulled it off. But i dont know how its better than years of work from someone else. Thanks though it means a lot coming from you, you're the best stitch artist on DA.

Ribera In reply to alohacooldude [2005-11-16 12:26:35 +0000 UTC]

Alot of artist here on DA don't really learn much because they are afraid of trying new things. That is only one of the reason though. But how can you say you don't have talent when you pull this one of as your first real stitch image? I think you should
continue to draw and find out how far you can go.

alohacooldude In reply to Ribera [2005-11-16 12:31:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, I just dont think its easy for me to believe that I could ever be on a comparable level to any of the stitch artists that I watch here. I'm the one that champions others, but i dont develop my own talent much anymore. Maybe cos I don't wanna get my hopes up that i might accomplish something? Like I dont wanna let myself down so I dont accept that im capable of stuff.

But if i do keep drawing i want to try new things, like new poses, new emotions, new techniques. The obstacle is the workload...this image took forever to do, the more complex each image i guess the longer it will take. I don't want to burn out. Thats what happened with the airplanes, I overworked myself until it wasnt fun anymore and stopped doing it, which is almost as bad as never doing it in the first place.

Ribera In reply to alohacooldude [2005-11-16 12:41:06 +0000 UTC]

You should not draw if you don't feel joy by doing it. To draw is to express your feelings and should only be done on own free will. You should always gain something when you create. Either if it's happines, a feeling of pride or a pay check . But you shouldn't draw if you don't like it so it's really simple. Keep in mind that you can't always draw a great image. sometimes is just won't turn out as you planed. But if you try again and again you will be able to pull it off. Go as far as possible. I don't think this is your limit.

alohacooldude In reply to Ribera [2005-11-16 12:44:24 +0000 UTC]

I did enjoy drawing this. I just don't enjoy how difficult it was at times.

I'm a perfectionist and that's what caused the airplane burnout. I guess I'm afraid of that happening again. So if I do a bad image it doesnt mean that I'm sliding backwards? I'm sure occasionally I'll have a bad one. I know you and brandi throw out a lot of images cos they dont look good enough to put on DA, I can imagine myself doing that as well.

If you learn by drawing you learn more when you do a misstake then when you do a finished artpiece.
So yes, i can say that you will make mistakes in art. Everyone dose. But the difference is that if you try again you will learn from the misstakes and never repeat it. Be a perfectionist to a degree, but to much is never a good thing.

OK, so let it be more about the creativity and the fun of it than making sure it looks exactly right, and then the overall good appearance will come with time. I get what your saying. If i work too hard on each image it will become more of a job than a hobby.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ribera In reply to alohacooldude [2005-11-16 12:58:40 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. As long as you can express your feelings though artwork it dosn't matter if it looks right or not. There is not many things that is more satisfying then when you have worked hard on an art piece and finaly get it done. ooohh the feeling!

Ribera In reply to Ribera [2005-11-16 13:08:15 +0000 UTC]

That's right. "The urge to express a feeling or a message though a visual media". That's what art is to me. There are many reasons here for you to continue and i am glad that you will.

alohacooldude In reply to Ribera [2005-11-16 13:02:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes I know that feeling now. When this was done and uploaded last night there was a huge feeling of "Yes! I finally finished it!"

Now I can look at the piece also as an observer and can see that snapshot of a moment in stitch's life, something that I usually ONLY see as an observer. But knowing I created it makes me happy. And know that people appreciate it, even happier. I can express myself through art, but knowing that someone else appreciates what ive done makes it even more worth doing.
