Description Badgerjack
Scientific name: Terracerva subterraneus (Underground earth deer)
Height: 1 foot tall
Weight: 15 to 25 pounds
Habitat: forests and grasslands
Native region: Southern Asia
Evolved from: Reeves's muntjac
Lifespan: 15 to 20 year

The badgerjack is a small burrowing deer descended from the muntjac. Its hooves have elongated into digging c laws, while its legs have shortened, making it an ungainly runner. It is omnivorous and feeds on both plant matter, such as tubers and fruit, and small animals like mice, frogs, and insects. It kills its prey with sharp canine teeth and has also become mildly venomous to ensure a quick kill. The badgerjack's venom is in its saliva and not administered in specialized fangs; thus, when it grooms its fur, traces of the poison are deposited on its coat, particularly along a greasy ridge of bristly hair along its back. While not fatally poisonous, it is toxic and highly irritating to both biting insect pests and predatory animals, discouraging the badgerjack's predators.
