Description Dyke is love
Dyke is
The spiral notebook under your mattress that weeps and moans and laughs
and the deleted internet history
and the pride you feel even as you hide
Dyke is marching at Pride
knowing that you are
united with the queers
admitted to a community
because you are a dyke
and wondering if that may be ridiculous
Dyke is smashing gender roles
reclaiming words, labels
and breaking free of them
Dyke is drag kings and evening gowns
Mothers, daughters, families
Coming out, being outed, closet cases
Hesitating, deliberating
Questioning, persisting
Dyke is falling in love with a person, not a gender
and falling in love with a gender while searching for a person
Dyke is writing an essay exposing you to your professor and peers
like a mollusk being opened, exposing it's pale, vulnerable innards
that you knew had been contained within
but were still protected with a shroud of secrecy
Dyke is giving your partner long kisses goodbye at the bus stop
Candlelit dinners and bar cruising
And knowing when you are single you remain a dyke
Dyke is
The lonely desperation of small-town isolation
wearing rainbow jewelery and protest pins hoping someone will notice
or you'll see someone with them too
Dyke is being who you are
A woman
A woman who loves other woman
A woman who wouldn't want it any other way
Dyke is beautiful
Dyke is who I am
Dyke is love

This is so true especially the part about wearing the rainbow jewelry and pins, hoping someone will notice.I always do that. : )

This is really great.
Didn't think I'd ever find someone who saw dyke as more than a manly lesbian who only wears red plaid, and faded baggy jeans, and driving a pickup.
People are so damn stereotypical.

this made me cry. I'm known as the dyke because i used to walk around an all girls school with the girl i was with at the time, shaved my head and because i dont try to hide who i am. honestly, i hate it, i hate the abuse and the looks i get, the rumours i hear about myself, but this gave me hope thank you

The journal and deleted browsing history were straight out of my mouth. When my parent's didn't know i was gay I didn't think it would be good for them to see me on gay youth sites... ha ha

ooo, very nice. I love it. definitely a dyke's feelings, lol. LMAO, i delete my internet history. My parents still think i'm an innocent, straight little angel, not the only little dyke in the history of our family. Pfht, yeah right. lol. I really, really love this poem, it flows really well and your wording is pretty cool, it makes the whole thing come together. Definitely a favorite for me.

I don't have critique either, but damn are you good at expressing this sorta stuff with absolute honesty, like
"wearing rainbow jewelery and protest pins hoping someone will notice"
that line.

I like it alot.

Thanks very much. It is funny, I wrote this poem so long ago but it continues to get comments in a way I never expected nor anticipated. I appreciate it so.

i love the flow at the end of that.

Awesome poem. It flows really well, and really shows what the writer is feeling. It paints a picture of what a dyke really is, and casts it in a positive and pridefull light =3
for sure ^_^

It seems personal but universal at the same time. Very nice.

"and the deleted internet history"

I had to laugh. I searched the word "dyke" on deviantArt... planning to delete my internet history afterwards, and this was the first or second thing that came up.

alternativepixie In reply to zweiPelzeulen [2007-03-18 07:21:51 +0000 UTC]

The deleted internet history is a major thing... so many do it without thinking about it. Did you delete the history?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zweiPelzeulen In reply to alternativepixie [2007-03-18 16:38:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah I did delete it. But I definitely think about it beforehand. With "dyke", I'm not necessarily ashamed about the gay implications, I just have a fear in the back of my mind that my mom will check the history and then think I'm some kind of sex-fiend looking for porn.

alternativepixie In reply to zweiPelzeulen [2007-03-18 17:06:18 +0000 UTC]

When I would delete the history, I was just afraid of my parents asking me any questions at all about it. I wasn't quite as worried about them thinking I was a sex-fiend XD

zweiPelzeulen In reply to alternativepixie [2007-03-18 22:30:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, my parents know that I'm gay, so I don't have to worry on that end. I think they just believe that they don't have to worry about sex. Because of course lesbians are all cuddly little celibate teddy bears.

Sooooo sweet. Absolutely irregular, more like a monologue in form and the verse parts of POD's Youth of the Nation in mood. I like it very much, because it has much connection to my personal route to understanding.
