I'm sorry this is a bit later, but in answer to your question(s), Jochem:
1. No I didn't use a script for this design. 
2. As for messing around with the transforms? Well, kind of. I added a radial blur to it and explored the mutation feature to see if I couldn't get anything interesting out of it. And I did.
