Description During the past year I have been working on this project (those that know me understand I need to stay busy with some kind of metal work). The crown is actually from a video game called Dante’s Inferno, after seeing the armor I just felt compelled to go out and make it. I plan on finishing the rest of the armor and will be posting the pieces as they come.
Coif (chainmail)
Tools
-Toothless pliers
Material
-Galvanized Rings (0.25 Inch (6.35 mm) inner diameter 14 gauge)
Notes
I owe a huge part of the coifs creation to my friend Adam who helped pick out the rings, figured out and taught me the pattern used to create it, and who did a fair amount of chaining. If it were not for him I doubt this would have turned out so well.
The rings used are considered armor grade (this means yes a sword to the head means I won’t be cut, just badly bruised with a concussion) which is of course over doing it, if it wasn’t over done it wouldn’t be mine. I have yet to weigh it but I’m guesstamating it to be ~20 lbs (9 kg). Some of you might notice that there are visible “holes” in it the reason for this is that the density of the rings wouldn’t allow the coif to lay down properly so we removed rings and yes it does make a pattern so no need to worry.
Crown
Tools
-Caliper
-Ruler
-Abrasive cutting wheels
-Plasma Torch
-Mig welder (flux wire)
-Metal chisels (thank you grandpa Cunningham)
Material
-0.0625 inch (1.5875 mm) thick stainless steel plating
-0.125 inch (3.175 mm) thick stainless steel plating
-0.375 inch (9.525 mm) thick stainless steel plating
-0.4375 inch (11.1125 mm) diameter stainless steel ball bearings
-0.1875 inch (4.7625 mm) diameter stainless steel rivets
Notes
What can I say other then it was a lot of cutting and welding. The leaf design on the wreath was done by using the metal chisels and a hammer to create the vein lines on the individual leaves. I also haven’t weighed the crown but again I guesstamate it to be around 15 lbs (6.803886 kg). The crown also does not fit on anyone’s head without the coif.
