The most widely distributed great cat in the Western Hemisphere, the cougar lives in a variety of habitats that offer adequate cover and prey, including lowland tropical forests, grasslands, mountains, coniferous forests and swamps. This mountain lion’s diet consists primarily of ungulates such as deer, moose and elk, but they also feed on smaller animals like raccoons, squirrels and rabbits. They cover the uneaten meat from their kills with debris and return several times to feed. Due to relentless hunting and habitat encroachment, cougars are threatened throughout most of their range.
