I was looking at some Stephen Gammell art after a friend told me they were reprinting Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and replacing all his pants-peeingly horrifying illustrations (OUTRAGE!!) and that put me in the mood to draw something gnarly.Well...I'm never really NOT in the mood to draw something gnarly, but sometimes you need that spark lit under your ass to get going.
Anyway this was done in Photoshop CS5 and once again I used some of the excellent free brushes from CreativeMac.com. If you are a digital painter, give this site a serious browsing - the selection of brushes is GREAT and they are free for both commercial and non-commercial use. The ones I used for this piece came from the Nagel series 33 (the dry media series, which has become my go-to for basic drawing and painting) as well as the series 37 and 42 skin texture sets. WHAT?!?! How could they replace his artwork, that was the best part of those books!!! I slept with those books under my pillow all through my childhood, to replace his masterpieces is disgusting!!! This is a wonderful tribute!

This is uber wicked bad ass and would make an awesome album cover! This alone makes you watch worthy, and I found this by searching for Stephen Gammell art. Mentioning him in the description must have led me here

Do you know of anywhere that has an archive of his art work? Including but not limited to the Scary Stories stuff. I was a kid when those books came out, and they took them out of our library at school because they gave a kid nightmares. Even back then it was controversial it seems.
BTW, they're making a movie out of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I don't know much about it, but from what I've heard it's in pre-production and due out in 2016.

I don't know of any good online archives; when I really wanted to study his art more closely I bought a copy of the Scary Stories Treasury with the original artwork. If you can find it I highly recommend it. I remember hearing about the books being removed from libraries when I was a kid; I don't think my school ever went that far but a lot of kids I knew were terrified of those illustrations.
I hadn't heard about the movie adaptation; I hope that turns out good!

The illustrations in the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books were the main reason I bought those books as a child. This is some amazing art! Looking at it really does remind me of a grub (I think grubs are cool because of how weird they look). The detail is amazing! The insect-leg like nipples, so weird!

And yeah, it's ridiculous, right?? They got the guy who illustrated the Series of Unfortunate Events books to do the new ones. They're cute and cartoony and far from scary. What REALLY sucks is that all the Gammell versions are going out of print now.

Yeah, I hear the prices are skyrocketing. I grabbed a copy of the treasury from Amazon the day I found out about the new art for about $25, but even then I was seeing stores selling them for $50 and up.
