In the driver’s seat, Arie paused for a moment, thinking. “Hmm.” He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “As the phoenix lives to die and be reborn in the flames, maybe this car does, too.”
She gave him a cock-eyed glance, not really liking the sound of that. “Arie, what you mean, die?”
Opening distant looking eyes now, he placed his hands on the dash and spoke softly. “Phoenix Car, I know who you are. Can you feel me? Can you release yourself to us? I know where you need to go and I promise we can take you there.” Then, he reached down and spun the ignition.
Life came into the car and she rumbled with anticipation for the destiny that awaited her. The dash lights and interior glowed warmly and pulsed like the beating of an untamed heart. It felt like she was alive, and Avalon was a little jealous. “What, was that some kind of spell?”
“No, we don’t limit ourselves with spells. I just made that up and thought it sounded cool.”
“‘Phoenix Car, I know who you are’...seriously?”
“Whatever. I was just...in the moment. That’s all.” He eased into a half-grin.
