Description
Some of you may have seen this piece in progress on my tumblr . I'm quite happy it is finally done.
For those who don't know, this is DΓs, Thorin's younger sister and mother to Fili and Kili (I know you know who they are). She was very young when Smaug chased her people out of Erebor. Spending most of her days in exile she would probably never wear garb as richly decorated as this. This is just a flight of fancy illustration - I wanted to imagine how she'd look if her royal status was never destroyed along with the dwarven kingdom.

I love how you captured her facial expressions and stances in all your drawings of her. She still has that 'bad ass' look, but also that soft motherly side to Fee and Kee.Β
You can, in my eyes, defiantly tell she's a female dwarf. Most people give her a man-like jawline, but you, did give her some aspect of one, but its softer and more feminine. It goes nicely with that beard of hers! > v <Β
Those boots too, I need them.Β
The thing I go back and forth between love and unsure, is her robe colors.Β
In the movies they're mainly dark, brown, black, darker blues, etc.. But I'm sure if the kingdom was still well and together without Smaug, colors would be lovely with all the gold, haha. I love them though!
You give her the royal feel, but also a feeling that she wouldn't think twice about kicking butt. She'd totally show up her brothers in my opinion.Β
In my mind for some odd reason, she could be quirky and sometimes bubbly, being the younger babied sibling, hence why Fee and Kee are like that. But also serious and tomboyish with having to fend off her brothers need be. Ah, siblings rivalry.. Royal sibling rivalry. ThrΓ‘in must've had his hands full with three dwarf children running wild.Β

Oh, boy! Thank you... this is the kindest and most thought-out comment I've received in a while! I'm really happy that you like my design of DΓs and that you have such a neat read on her character as well. I agree with you, I think she's got to be both strong and absolutely with a sense of humour, given her brother and the kids. :b
The feminine/masculine aspect is always a difficult one to balance. I try not to focus on that, but just go for streamlined anatomy and a sense of power and strength in her β I will get the "BOOBS NOT BIG ENOUGH" comments regardless of what I do. I don't really care anymore β and it is my secret hope to push this DΓs design and get to 'unofficial canon' status with it. XD

It truly is, many people don't understand that! Put them in a place and say, "See this woman? Draw her so she looks like her, but give her a masculine jawline, bushy eye brows, etc." it won't be easy, not for me anyway.Β
A lot of people think she's strong because she has the power, but I'm sure she trained just as much as Thorin and Frerin did.Β
Bah, Boobs get in the way. No pictures of dwarrow dams have been released, so no one knows what their chest looks like! Not all women have big breasts.Β

One of my friends is actually writing a AU fanfiction that had Dis restored to royal status. Of course she hasn't posted it yet, darnit. It was really good!

I love your pictures of dwarven ladies. Their beards look so soft. I love that lady elves have beards but you can still depict them as lovely/elegant ladies.
You'd probably really like the dwarf ladies in Prachett.

I think to get that level of massaging in my hands would be eaten by the beard, and then some angry male dwarf is going to come for me for touching his wife's beard. Then a war of men and dwarves breaks out and the carnage is unimaginable.

Also I think that's how the dwarves would grow extinct. They will annihilate each other over the smallest slight, like one clansman outbidding another on Ebay.

Then I'd probably end up getting set up with his brother to keep the lie alive and end up in some dwarf marriage. If I'm going to have to go live with some race it's the Hobbits. Gold is good but I dig the round-door hobbit holes.
