Description This was an attempt at creating a zoomorphic garter snake naga. His name is Mekkul.
I imagine he used to be a normal garter snake who lived for 100 years, and eventually achieved enlightenment, shed his skin, and changed into a new shape that was better suited for communicating to the humans in the interest of protecting his race.
Pencil with tinting added in Photoshop.

Wow, this one is very cool....at first glance I thought maybe gecko, because of the pads at the ends of his fingers, they sort of remind me of the lizard suction cups, but once past that I definitely see the snake too!

I like how the snake markings remain on his body, and the belly scales are visible along his torso and even faintly showing up over his pec muscles, a nice way of melding the humanlike body with snake features. I think his nose might look better if it were more snakelike slit than humanlike nose, but I still think he's great.

Very interesting take on a naga. Though are there naga males? The eternal question about "fantasy" creatures... Nicely done. I like the hair. ^_^

looks realy nice!
His eyes reminds me of the unique robot in "I,Robot"
The only critism i can give here, is that the scales on his arms are pointing the wrong way, and looks like you found that out too late.

How did you do the background?

lovely work, though not sure i like the design persay. i think its original, but something about the face doesnt seem quite snake-like. then again its your character, still love the pencil detailing and the texture of his skin.

I would kind of agree with you in that it didn't turn out quite how I wanted and so I'm not completely happy with it. But there was a lot of work and time invested into it and so I decided to put it here.

andrea-koupal In reply to electra-gretchen [2005-08-05 19:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, he should have a snaketail in place of legs, which I really ought to have shown. Maybe in another try

electra-gretchen In reply to andrea-koupal [2005-08-05 23:38:49 +0000 UTC]

I supposed it because there're the tail entries and he only needs the face-arms to explain the humans about it race, isn't it? Well, that's my theory xD
And looks really cool with half "human" and half "snake" body

RoseImmortal [2005-08-05 03:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Interesting!

His gentle, almost nurturing-seeming character really fits what I've heard about garter snakes...that they're very docile animals. The big, watery eyes in particular get that impression across, especially with how he seems to want to protect the his "little brother".

Is there a story these nagas come from? And how does an animal achieve enlightenment on the order that a human would?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrea-koupal In reply to RoseImmortal [2005-08-05 19:07:58 +0000 UTC]

The idea of an animal achieving a higher concious was inspired in part by certain Japanese myths, in which if certain cats live for 100 years they become Nekomata. Also certain Hindu ideas where humans, animals and other beings are all just different stages of soul reincarnation. I love mythology so ideas like that help inspire my artwork.

RoseImmortal In reply to andrea-koupal [2005-08-05 22:13:33 +0000 UTC]

Very interesting. I'd known about Hindu beliefs that you could reincarnate as an animal--but never of an animal gaining enlightenment while still in an animal form.
